Nostalgic, Cute, With Excellent Music -- Good Ol Humongous Entertainment

Preliminary: Wow so the version I had must've been the Windows 3.1 CD-ROM released in seemingly 1995 (there was a 3do version in 94?!). Not huge differences between the 95 and original 93 DOS release, except the instrumental intro song rather than singing. Preliminary: Wow so the version I had must've been the Windows 3.1 CD-ROM released in seemingly 1995 (there was a 3do version in 94?!). Not huge differences between the 95 and original 93 DOS release, except the instrumental intro song rather than singing. I see there is a floppy disc version as well, which does eliminate some features and dialog, but since this was originally optimized and released on CD-ROM, I will be settling for the original DOS CD-ROM version from 1993.

And right off the bat, the nostalgia is so heavy with the main tune. Made by my favorite "The Fat Man" George Alistair Sanger

It's beautiful, the music and gameplay and UI and vibe are indeed LucasArts/Monkey Island/Maniac Mansion and Humongous Entertainment vibes,

Day 1

It's starts so colorful and Goes To The Parade-esque. A bit silly needing to get the Butterfly to cause the official transition, but I must've figured it out as a kid (I think it's in the manual if I recall correctly, or just clicked a bunch lol). And we transition to a dark, oddly alluring, akin-to-the-spaceship/alien-Rugrats-episode aesthetic. I dunno, obviuously it's just nostalgia, but an almost Lynchian dreamlike vibe to the Moon realm. And the space part before it (with avant-garde meanderings on the keyboard, to boot).

Omg I loved this diner as a kid enter image description here

Hmm if I'm understanding correctly, this is before much was randomized to make each playthrough different like in the later HE games. Also, because they don't just show you a written version, half my challenge so far has been udnerstanding Putt Putt's pronunciation, say, of the apartment lol. I lovvved as a kid going to the different aprtments.

I love that inventory management is very handlable and cute idea that it's in your dashboard.

Had to take a moment to jam out to the "Man on the Moon" tune, one I particularly like and have had downloaded on my computer for years. It sounds a bit different with a Soundblaster Pro rather than the tweaked version available via the Humongous Entertainment Soundtracks youtube channel.

And speaking of, I love how it does have specific music for specific areas but then the tune plays out even if you change where you are and shifts accordingly. No track felt overplayed or overly repetitive.

Made it back, with quite the beatup rocket ship! And I always love a sunset/sunrise (well, sunset then moon rise in this) ending. I always liked that they made the credits interactive in HE games. enter image description here enter image description here

Look: 9/10

Sound: 9.5/10

Play: 8/10 Definitely for kids, and in many ways just a simple adventure game, but it has many QoL features for 93 and is on par with any of its contemporary graphic advengture games, albeit just simplified and to-the-point.

Feel: 9.5/10 Fundamental to me.

Attachment: 9/10 Fundamental and I played it to the end, however like with all the HE games, how often I want to play through them, rather than just listen to the soundtrack or watch a playthrough, remains to be seen.

Overall: 9/10

After playing the first game for sooo many times, I thought we could use something new (even though I have to admit there's been some dabbling with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the meantime) and we went with Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon. Well, I can only assume, but it seems clear to me that with this game the dev team felt more confident and wanted to try something more complex. There's not necessarily much more stuff to do but it's more... dense and it feels more similar to the proper dynamics of a graphic adventure from back in the day. It's probably a bit too complex for my three years old to play it without guidance but that's fine, since most of the time we play together (she started playing Putt-Putt Joins the Parade by herself only after really mastering it with me). And anyway, even if some puzzles are too complicated for her, the game is full of fun stuff to do. She particularly loved the cocktails that temporarily change Putt-Putt' color (going to the body shop and changing the paint was her favorite part in the first game), the observatory (she gave her comment on every single constellation), the pseudo whack-a-mole game (I had to help her on the first try, but then she got it, she played it a lot and she was amazingly good at it) and exploding the fireworks during credits. Also, she LOVES the moon in real life so of course this was perfect for her.
