Preliminary: I see I gave this a 5 star when I played it last, and I remember enjoying its simplicity "this will be good for casual NA players". However, a bit of a red flag that it took me several months to finish it according to my Playthrough dates from 2019 and the reviews too. But I'm all about simple mash A RPGs! So as long as the Look and Sound are good... (Oh, it's super low on my FFs best to worst list heh so maybe I gave out 5 stars like candy back then?)
Right off the bat I enjoyed the intro music and the QoL features for entering your name. And yesss I love the Level Forest music I guess I may end up being in the minority opinion on this one :-p
Early Game
Sheesh I was definitely underleveld for that Flamesaurus Rex boss but I beat it. Meh to the number of status ailments tho.
Indeed the game is feeling quite meh, not because it's tooo easy or simple, it's just well meh. However, the music keeps being really good and I like the cozy Look. As I always say with early JRPGs, I wish …

Uff yea and this Falls Basin "puzzle" (tho I like these kind of puzzles) is just a bit tedious with the formatting and battle sequences. I'll take a break but this may have to be a 3 star and move on (tho again, the music keeps delivering).
Ok I came back to it later and I am just loving this Falls Basin music too much to care abuot its faults :-p
I love the QoL feature that it remenmbers your last selection in battle. And the Auto feature for the guests that come and go. I also like how things you do in a dungeon stay no matter what entrance you go through, which maeks for some nice puzzles that reminded me more of Zelda or Pokemon than an FF.
Mid Game
Oh gosh I suppose with entering the Mine I am basically mid-game based on the mikesrpgcenter guide I'm using. I love this site and am glad to finally have a game to use it for like back in 2018/9 when I started getting active on this site.
Some of the songs are starting to repeat but they are so good, I don't mind. Really it was the music that got me to push through and now I can genuinely say I fully have the RPG hook and can see why this got a 5 star. Still a bit unsure about the Favorites shelf spot, but this music is definitely that good I can see why I had put it there before :-p
A lot of the music and the Look of the dungeon areas remind me of Mother and, soon, Mother 2/Earthbound. LIke the Volcano, for example. and Fireburg's music. (the Look of that dungeon was just repeatedly used a lot heh, but still Mother-esque)
I dunno how other people just mashed A and called it a day, this is hard! Esp the boss battles! Thank goodness for teh forgiving Try Again and Save functions. Also thank goodness for how powerful the Life spell is in this! (Full heals)
Yessss the Zeldaisms continue with this Grapple Hook type item.
The AI is surprisingly intelligent for your guest characters, with Kaeli using Cure against the undead Skeletons.
Oooo pretty
The music continues to be excellent and tons of good new tunes.
Late Game
Welp, I have Excalibur now and am in the last section of the walkthrough so I consider this late game. Here goes nothing!
These Psychshield bosses are tedious.
Lol this cheesy triumphant music at the end sequence. The credits tune was a jam tho. Beautiful ending screen/credits screen tho

yessss and I love when they have a proper ending screen I think this was my Discord image (or wiat, was it my Grouvee image?!) or something for a while! FFs should always write out The End imo
Look: 8/10
Sound: 9/10
Play: 8.5/10 Rough-ish start but really came together with the Zeldaisms and uniquely "NA folks will enjoy this!" format
Feel: 9/10
Attachment: 9/10 I mean I 100%'d this twice.
Overall: 8.7/10
Maybe it's because I wasn't quite in the mood for a SNES game at the time or I didn't have the nostalgia factor, but I was a little disappointed with Mystic Quest. I felt it was too simplistic and the battles were pretty monotonous. I did really enjoy the boss battles and seeing the Chocobo (even if it was just on a weather vane) so that is why I boosted the rating to 2 stars.
Definitely not as bad as I've heard, just super streamlined. It's actually even simpler than the first Final Fantasy. The two biggest problems I have with the game is that the walk speed is SUPER slow and there isn't a way to figure out what certain spells and items do. I don't know if it's worth playing today, but it might be a good starting point for people who haven't played a JRPG before, don't have time to learn complicated mechanics, or people who play sporadically.
An incredibly forgettable game, but I actually would recommend to play this as a first RPG or if you're a really big Final Fantasy fan.
I am not sure if this or 6 was my first Final Fantasy game. I rented this game multiple times in the 90s and beat it twice over the next decade on emularor. I did everything and maxed out the hero.
Even though the gameplay, world, characters and plot are simplistic the game has a certain charm that makes me love it. Also has considerable nostalgia. I enjoyed exploiting the enemy weaknesses with the right weapon or magic and using the special effect of each weapon to navigate the environment. This would definitely be the first rpg I would recommend an rpg newbie play. The music is awesome.
What a cruddy game. I guess I feel in my decision to play the FFs, I should do this one since I own it. Not the best time.
Why does the bad guy supposedly start a prophecy that he’ll be defeated by a hero and then sit and wait at the top of a tower for the hero to come and kill him? What is the purpose for any of your allies joining you? Why Phoebe at the end over the others? Why is the ending just Benjamin saying “Hi [person], how are you? How’s [other person]? Okay maybe I’ll visit them sometime. Ok ima take your boat, bye!” Who knows? Who cares! Look, these weather vanes are chocobos!
Blech. Cleansing my palate with Illusion of Gaia, Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger before I put the SNES away.
Moving on to the next FF, Mystic Quest. I'm about halfway through after a few hours. Gameplay consists of me holding the A button, sometimes curing, sometimes casting a spell. And oh man, one thing that drives me to rage - most battles have 3 monsters. You have two party members. 100% of the time, your guest can one-shot enemies. The main character cannot. Both of them miss ALL THE TIME. So battles are several turns longer than any of them really need to be, for no reason. At least no reason that adds any fun or interest to the gameplay.
I reduced my ranking by a star because I forgot just how truly mind numbingly boring this game was. We could have had Final Fantasy 5. :(
