Need for Speed: Heat (2019)

NFS: Heat is a great arcade racing game and a good NFS title, that is full of bad design choices.

The Good:

• Racing is entertaining and once you get used to the drifting mechanics, you can have a lot of fun
• I like the separation of Day and Night, both being important for separate reasons
• Off-Road races are a nice addition, had a lot of fun beating my main NPC rival Vladimir with my weaker BMW
• The world is full of stuff to do, although most of it is collectibles
• High-heat races really raise the stakes, you have to earn your way to the top every night
• Car selection is superb, from older classics to top-tier Ferraris you find everything (no Bugatti or Toyota though)
• Visual Tuning is cheap and top-tier, you can easily customize almost every part of your car and even download others' designs if you are lazy
• Not the best written story, but at least not a mute hero

The Bad:

• Once you reach Rep lv.50, reputation is mostly useless and I wish you could get money instead to buy cars
• Online mode was a nice addition to make the world feel more alive, but no real chat and the lack of willing to race makes it mostly pointless
• The game only makes a race seem like completed if you finish the lower tier version of it and if you complete a race, there is no easy way to know if you finished first (real WTF in a racing game)
• Fast travel and car changing is a bit tedious, plus I don't really like the menu system ( if I go into a garage, I want to come out of the same garage without having to choose it again)

I probably forgot a bunch of small things that annoyed the heck out of me, but still I like this game and I hope NFS: Unbound will be similarly fun, but with a lot more polishment.

Somewhere out there is a universe where Burnout Paradise has a health bar system instead of a "a single gentle brush with anything in the environment that is not an opposing vehicle will WRECK you" system. Presumably the people of that universe also grow pizza from their trees and have never heard of the X-Files reboot.

Unfortunately Need For Speed Heat doesn't quite scratch that itch, as it's much more of a traditional racer than Burnout. While it does have the billboards and long jumps, it doesn't have modes like Stunt or Road Rage, and I much prefer BP's 3 easily-understood stats to NFSH's overly-complex stats and upgrade system that ultimately doesn't seem to translate directly to how the car actually drives. Also BP is just generally prettier, and the map is a little more interesting (obviously, given that it leans more into the stunt driving).

That being said, I ended up playing a lot more of this game than I'd expected to, and it's definitely got an engaging gameplay loop.

Need for Speed Heat lähti kokeiluun lähinnä sen moninpeli aspektin vuoksi.Sellaisena se onkin mukiinmenevä kokemus, ihan mielenkiintoisella Crew-mekaniikalla ja auton kehittämisellä. Itse tulin peliin mukaan muutaman illan myöhässä ja muut olivat ehtineet jo kehittää autojansa, mutta hyvänä puolena pelissä on mahdollisuus tasoittaa peliä niin, että jokaisella on käytössään saman tasoiset autot. Pelin suurimpana jujuna ja toisaalta nettipelin ongelmana on sen jako päivään ja yöhön. Päivällä ajetaan virallisia kisoja, joista saa kerättyä rahaa ja yöllä osallistutaan laittomiin katukisoihin, jossa palkintona on mainetta ja kunniaa. Maineella (leveleillä) saa avattua uusia autoja ja kehitysosia, joten peli on ainaista tasapainoilua sen suhteen kumpaa puolta pitäisi pelata. Tässä kahtiajaossa on yksi moninpelin tuoma ongelma, kun yökisoihin et voi osallistua, jos olet samaan aikaan ajamassa päivässä ja toisinpäin.

Yökisoihin oman mausteensa tuo sen push-your-luck -mekaniikka. Mitä enemmän yökisoja ajat, sitä suurempi Heat-level sinulla on, ja mitä suurempi Heat-level sinulla on sitä enemmän saat mainetta. Jos poliisit saavat pelaajan kiinni ennen pääsemistä safehouselle, pelaaja menettää Heat-levelin kautta tulevan kertoimen. Seuraavana yönä Heat-level lähtee taas nollista.

Ajotuntuma ei ensin alkuun tuntunut kovin hyvältä, mutta pienien säätöjen jälkeen sekin rupesi maistumaan jo paremmalta. Silti verrattaessa hyvin samanlaiseen Forza Horizon 4:seen ajotuntuma ei vaan ole yhtä hyvä Heatissa. Auton kehittäminen on ihan mielenkiintoista ja sen muutaman kymmenen tunnin ajan pelissä oli mukavasti sisältöä. Yksinpelitarina oli suoraan sanottuna yksi huonoimmista, joita olen hetkeen pelannut, joten pelkästään sen takia en peliä suosittele harkitsemaan. Moninpelihupailuna peli toimi hyvin, mutta ei täydellisesti.

NFS Heat is a somewhat more modern version of NFS Undercover. It is open-world, with various collectibles and activities like drifts, jumps and speedtraps that you'd expect from a standard open-world game nowadays. It's also got a story mode, which is bog-standard and nothing special. There's also a decent choice of cars in terms of variety, with a good customization system. The driving mechanic is centered on a 2-dimensional scale: On-Road vs Off-Road and Drift vs Race. Upgrade parts allow you to tailor any car to be anywhere on this graph. That's about as complex as it gets, which for an arcade racer is fine, but if you play serious racing games the handling is a complete joke; though it's a nice change I suppose.

The game is basically structured as an RPG, where to upgrade your car with the best parts and get higher-tier cars, you need to level up and gain "Rep"; the currency earned from night-time driving. Cash is best earned during daytime races, where there are no police to worry about. Unfortunately, the police chases are the worst aspect in this game; the AI is horrible and it's mostly rubber-banding, and I don't recall a single time when a spike strip hit me. It's just inconsistent and random, which takes away a huge aspect of what an NFS game should be like. This is very far from being 2005's Most Wanted.

In conclusion, NFS Heat is built on a solid blueprint, but executed poorly. It was a rushed game and it could be an awesome NFS game with a few tweaks, but when you compound together all of the major issues, it's kind of difficult to recommend, but I still enjoyed it for what it is.

Need For Speed on avoimen maailman autopeli, joka sijoittuu feikki-Miamiin. Kyseessä on toistaiseksi uusin NFS. Teasattu seuraava osa vaikuttaisi heivaavan tämän pelin tyylin ja avoimen maailman mekaniikat veke sekä palaavan tyypillisempään kisaamiseen.

Miami-miljööstä ja siihen liittyvistä mielikuvista on lypsetty kunnolla estetiikkaa ja fiilistä irti: arkkitehtuuri, soundtrack ja neon-kyllästetty värimaailma ovat kokonaisvaltainen elämyspaketti. Ja pelin näyttävät grafiikat tekevät kaupungilla kruisailusta paljon vakuuttavampaa. Itse ajaminen vaatii totuttelua, mutta hetken tutustumisen ja auton tuunaamisen jälkeen ohjattavuus alkaa toimia todella hyvin. Tämän takia peli on oudosti vaikeimmillaan aivan alussa. Autojen tuunaamiseen ja kustomisointiin on panostettu kunnolla, ja pitkälti mistä tahansa pelin lukuisasta autosta voi rukkailla muodikkaan mylvivän myllyn.

Avoimen maailman tutkiminen sekä yön ja päivän vuorottelu eri asioiden saavuttamiseksi toimivat melko lailla hyvin. Rennommat päiväkisat rahan saamiseksi ja intensiiviset yösekoilut maineen kartuttamiseksi tarjoavat hyvää vastapainoa toisilleen. Kisojen lisäksi kartalla on paljon pientä löydettävää ja tehtävää, mutta moni pienempi juttu, kuten piilotettujen neon-flamingojen rikkominen, ei tarjoa mitään kovin merkittävää palkintoa. Muistaakseni Burnout Paradisessä avoimen maailman pikkutehtävät oli hoidettu koukuttavammin.

Iso elefantti huoneessa lienee kuitenkin dramaattinen tarinamoodi, jota tuskin kukaan toivoi peliin. Omasta mielestäni se on ihan hauskaa viihdettä, vaikkakin todella kliseistä. Niin on moni toimintaelokuvakin. Ja on tarina todella nopeasti lusittu läpitsekin. Tarinaa isompi ärsytyksen aihe on pelin ruuhkainen UI, sekavat valikot sekä hämmentävät moninpelijärjestelyt. Moninpeli on hauskaa, mutta vaatii säätämistä. Tätä ei myöskään helpota pakko käyttää rupuista EA Originia pelin launcherina – vaikka pelaisit peliä Steamista.

Ei Need for Speed Heat täydellinen ole, mutta yllättävän paljon siitä sain siitä iloa irti etenkin kavereiden kanssa sekoillessa. Ja hauskuus on useimmiten se pelien pohjimmainen tarkoitus. Siinä mielessä hyvä suoritus siis.

Needless say I am not in love with the fact that parts are locked behind rep. Honestly, this game is probably not the best for me given the structure of the entire Need for Speed series and premise. That said, I haven't found another racing game that lets me kit out a huge array of cars nor is as fun to play because I need not worry about realistic physics or simulation style mechanics. All I want is a racing power fantasy with neat cars that I can make into racing monsters, without all the cruft that comes with this game.
