Wowowowow! Now this is how all 'detective' games should be. No hand holding whatsoever, long and challenging. Yes I had to use a walkthrough every now and then but the story blew me away, along with the obvious time and research that went into this game. Highly recommend you play this in one sitting. It will take you 5 or 6 hours but so worth it!
I was looking forward to a good mystery game with this. I liked how it told you to take notes and use the camera mechanic to take pictures of evidence. I hoped there would be interesting deductions to make and mysteries to puzzle out. However... the mysteries I was solving were mostly "Which of these dozen cupboards will have a key in it?" and "what door will the key open?" The story is told through notes and journals which tell the tale of small down drama and scandals, and that's all fine, but the gameplay is just so dull. There's too much space to explore and too few objects of interest taking up that space.
Warning You have to go into this game completely blind to get the most out of it. It has 0 replay value because once you know the story that's kinda it.
This game doesn't give you anything but the exposition. Everything else you have to find and take the time to read for yourself. This is where having a strong sense of curiosity and a love of piecing things together are necessary traits. You are alone in this small town, no time limit and no easy list of quest objectives either. You do keep a journal but not everything you find will be written down in it so taking your own notes is encouraged.
I don't think this game is for everyone because it has a very leisurely approach to it. However, because it leaves everything up to you to figure out, there is a greater reward of accomplishment when you piece things together. There might be points where you are stuck and not sure where to go next but I if you are willing to look and investigate everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) there is usually enough bread crumbs to get you back on track.
Although a big part …

Although a big part of that is how everyone that lived here kept journals and updated them frequently. Probably the most unrealistic thing here. XD
I really enjoyed this game and really want more like it!
Cool quest game! Very solvable and intuitive. Great music and overall atmosphere
I tried. Lord knows I tried.
By all accounts I should have really gotten into this game, but I felt like the execution was just too poor. Extremely tedious, obtuse, and...well...I guess not fun.
Love murder mysteries. Love walking simulators. Love first person puzzle stuff. Love being a detective. Do not love The Painscreek Killings.
