If You Enjoy Point and Click You'll Have a Good Time

Some people consider this the best of the Monkey Island series, although I feel it falls a bit short of that

A new development team worked on this, but I have to be honest in that I didn't feel it hurt the game at all

Finally, we had a voice for our hero Guybrush Threepwood and it is wonderfully done

The humor is very well done and contains many pop culture references which I suppose could be lost on a younger gamer. The animation is very fluid and pleasing to the eye. It has a great storyline

It's a funny strange game with dueling and ship battles

The puzzles are strong and mostly not frustrating. Of course, getting stuck is something one must accept in the point and click genre

A fun time, but perhaps a bit on the short side

Stands with the first two entries as an all time classic!
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I had only played the first two entries in the series as a child and figured this game must not be the same caliber as the Monkey Island 1 & 2 since I had heard a lot about those classics, but didn't know anything about the third installment. Boy was I wrong.

What a pleasant surprise to be treated to another Monkey Island adventure that has all the same charm, wit, and amazing music as the previous entries in the series.

There's even an easy mode option you can enable if tough adventure game puzzles aren't for you. But you'll definitely appreciate the game a lot more if you've played the others.

If you were a fan of the first two games and never played this one, do yourself a favor and experience more Monkey Island awesomeness!

Twenty years ago I did appreciate some things that The Curse of Monkey Island did but I thought it wasn't a good game and it was an atrocious sequel. After replaying it twenty years later, I partially made peace with it, because I don't get upset anymore by the choices they made in making a sequel and I was more able to appreciate its good things, mostly in the main part of the game: Blood Island is really well made and quite funny. So, in the end, I'm happy I replayed it. But I didn't even remotely change my mind on its issues: I still think most of the puzzles are bad and badly communicated (especially if you play at the harder difficulty), the writing is bland and the ending is atrocious. And as a sequel, I got no issues with how they changed the visual style (I do appreciate the boldness) but I don't like how they completely changed the characterizations and how much they recycled gags, puzzles and situations from the two previous games... it kinda feels like the boring approach to the new Star Wars stuff; also, the use of Elaine, who was such a strong and …

In the end, I think that ending is the reason why, even though I appreciated so much Blood Island, I still got out of it with a sour taste in my mouth. But, hey, the bakgrounds are lovely and I'm happy I played the part that was cut from the localized version.

Monkeying Around
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

The Monkey Island games are considered a classic of adventure gaming. In my attempt to sample the old LucasArts games I finally gave this one a try. I know it’s the 3rd, but I was drawn to this one for its hand drawn animation look. As such, I probably missed a few things that someone who played the 1st two would’ve caught. Still, this game can be enjoyed without prior knowledge from them. enter image description here

So, the graphics, that’s what drew me to this, ha pun. It looks great and has a Saturday morning cartoon feel to the world. There are a lot of cutscenes and those are made all the better by the animated look. There is a downside, sometimes you get stuck in pixel hunting and with the painted backgrounds it’s hard to tell what’s an interactable object and what’s set dressing.

I’ll admit, like with most old adventure games, I had a guide handy for most of this game. There’s some moon logic going on in Monkey Island. Some puzzles make sense, sometimes it feels like there is a simple option you have, but it doesn’t work, and plenty of puzzles have outlandish solutions. Maybe we were all smarter …

Maybe we were all smarter as kids back in the 90s, but a lot of the time you aren’t given a clear idea of what is being asked of you. Had I not had a guide I would’ve defaulted to the old ‘use everything on everyone’ option, which is never a fun option. One puzzle I remember that was kinda fun was making a hangover remedy, which required you have a dog bite you so you could use it’s hair, “hair of the dog” get it. enter image description here

The writing in this game is top notch and I feel is what it is best remembered for. Guybrush is a fun main character with lots of great snark & quips and the zany people he encounters usually get in a joke or two. There were times when I had to pause the game because I was busy laughing too hard. As far as the story, it’s short and simple, your pirate bride is turned to solid gold via a curse and you have to reverse it while being dogged by the dread pirate LeChuck. You visit two main islands, each with a handful of locations. The game seems like it’s a good length for what it is, but it does feel like just a bigger version of a Flash game you could play for free on NotDoppler back in the day. enter image description here

The music is catchy as heck. I’ve caught myself humming the main theme at work. Each area has a fun ditty that matches the location; the graveyard has organs, the port city has a Spanish guitar feeling, etc. enter image description here

All in all, if you want a good laugh for a few bucks, this game can provide it. I think it’s reputation is relatively well earned even if the puzzles are a little ridiculous.

I'm not sure I can be completely objective about this one. Curse is the first game in the series I ever really dove into (I had the first one on Sega CD as a kid but I didn't understand it then) and it kind of blew my mind as a dumb teenager. I didn't realize games could be so witty and clever while looking like what Dragon's Lair promised and failed to deliver. I remember buying it at Best Buy and when I got home, our phone line wasn't working all weekend, so I was forced to play through the game with no walkthroughs or hints. I did manage to get through it too! I think it's the one and only time I finished an adventure game completely on my own. I don't have the patience these days to brute force my way through the world trying everything on everything and the temptation for walkthroughs are too strong.

I do think this game is the best balance for the puzzles in the series though. It doesn't have complete moon logic puzzles that make you think "How could anyone have ever figured this out???" but it does require plenty of out …

I do think this game is the best balance for the puzzles in the series though. It doesn't have complete moon logic puzzles that make you think "How could anyone have ever figured this out???" but it does require plenty of out of the box thinking that has its own logic that works. It doesn't require constant backtracking like Monkey Island 2 either, which is a relief. The inventory is large but it doesn't become overwhelming like the previous game either. Combine all of that with the great animation, voice acting, and cast of characters, it's just a wonderful game.

I do have a few minor quibbles with it though. Act V just kinda happens, it doesn't really have any sort of intro to it. I don't really like how Elaine got sidelined either. She had all sorts of agency in the first one and rescued herself but here, she's literally turned into an object. Kinda rubs me the wrong way.

Wonderful Monkey Island game as usual
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I can't review this game objectionably because The Monkey Island games stand as watershed moments of my gaming adolescence, something that not only helped shaped my young taste in not only video games, but my personal sense of humor as well. This third installment has evaded me all these years and right off the back of a new Monkey Island game being announced, figured It was time to finally knock this one off the backlog.

It's classic Monkey Island, and it's as good if not better than the rest of them. The artwork was originally a turn off for me, but I've come to feel this may actually be peak Monkey Island as far as aesthetics go. The cutscenes are gorgeous and bring you back to that swansong era of American animation, and the humor is just right. When this game took a jab at Myst, another favorite adventure game/series, it got a genuine knee slapper of a laugh out of me.

The puzzles that make up the gameplay are all in all surprisingly logical, especially so if you're familiar with the series and it's sense of humor. Launching a corpse out of a hotel window never felt so satisfying!

I don't get it

I know the hype there is around this game, so it makes me feel kind of guilty to write this, but... I didn't like this game one bit. I know it's for children (and I even played it when I was a child), but even when I was young I thought it was silly and incredibly hard. Some of the puzzles don't make any sense, and without the occasional help of a guide, I would have never figured out some of the things I'm supposed to do. The backgrounds are nice and interesting to explore, but that's about it.
