An End to an Era

This sequel is the official death of the Tony Hawk series...

Even with the best graphics seen in this franchise, they unfortunately changed everything else. The controls were God awful and I didn't make it past the first level and shut the game off it disgust.

RIP 1999-2006

Back in my school days I've been like the biggest Tony Hawk games' fan there is. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4 on PC were the ones I've spent the most time with (I have also completed them inside out). As much as I anticipated the next game in the series, the PC release was nowhere to be found, so I just thought it was a console exclusive. Only recently have I found out there actually is a PC port of Tony Hawk's Underground (going to try it soon). A few years later I tried American Wasteland, but running around without a skateboard seemed to me too much of a step aside from the games I loved, so I've given up on the series. Later I've seen the embarrassing E3 presentation of the skateboard controller and after that even more embarrassing reviews for the games the controller was intended for. At this point, the series was dead to me.

Recently, when I decided to finish everything I'm interested in on the Xbox 360 before getting rid of the console, I found out there have been three Tony Hawk games that didn't make it to PC. Those are: Project 8, Proving Ground, and Pro Skater 5. Project 8 was the first ever Tony Hawk game I've played on anything other than keyboard. Oh my god was I humiliated the moment I started the tutorial. Playing on a gamepad was like I've never played these games before. I couldn't do shit. Having struggled for about an hour I gave up when it came to getting a simple 10k combo. I remember it took me quite some time to get the hang of the keyboard controls of THPS3, but being good at this game on a gamepad seems simply impossible to me. After that I tried Proving Ground and obviously it wasn't any different in terms of my performance, so I didn't even bother starting THPS5. What a shame, I really wanted to play those games, but I guess I will have to wait for X360 or PS3 emulators to play them on keyboard, because otherwise these games are unplayable for me. PROBABLY I'M JUST GETTING OLD.

Anyway, as for now, I'm going to jump straight into THPS 3 and 4 to feed my nostalgia hunger. We'll see how it goes.
