Beat as Smith, because he looked like a sniper. It took me a while to figure the power up system. At first I was using them as soon as I got them, which had me switching back and forth between the starter pistol and the long range rifle. Eventually I figured it out and did the rest of the game with homing missiles. They allowed me to shoot around obstacles and were invaluable during boss fights, but there were times when they failed to go after anything and a straightforward bullet would have been better. I did not make use of the character switching but tried it out on another playthrough immediately after. Smith was definitely the best with homing. Iron was 2nd with long range dumb fire rockets. His flamethrower was good too but the rockets better complimented the homing. Beans was kind of useful with his best bombs that could reach awkwardly placed enemies. He would probably do pretty well against bosses but terrible in general combat. Burns was probably the worst character. The grenades sucked, leaving him very vulnerable in most combat. The machine gun was probably the better choice for him but it lacked the range of rockets.
I really liked the ability to switch characters on the fly, but it did not work during boss fights. I also liked how each character had separate lives, so each playthrough could be different depending on who died. There was also the feature to bring in a computer controlled character for a few seconds. This was helpful on boss fights because the AI character was invulnerable and drew fire. Unfortunately, having so much on the screen caused severe slowdown and his bullets looked the same as some of the bosses. This summon could be spammed without penalty but I did not bother to use it outside of bosses. I think there should have been a cooldown or special meter charged up by killing or hitting enemies. Dying in 1 hit from anything was annoying, especially for just touching an enemy. There was also some very tricky platforming that would have cost me lives if I was not save state scumming. One of the most ridiculous was the level going from aircraft to aircraft, trying to walk to the next wing. This is where I stopped my 2nd playthrough as I just wanted to try out the other weapons. I liked both the side scrolling and top down, the destructible environment, and the boss mechanics. The story was minimal and the game could have used more levels. Overall a very fun game that could have used more content and less slowdown.
