Mr. Do!'s scenario is a roller coaster, and the object is to reach the top. As the cars (and eventually other objects) speed around the track, you must escape by using a super speed button, or by climbing up small ladders scattered about the track. Two icons at the end of the level range from cakes to EXTRA letters or diamonds change upon collecting cherries at the top of each letter. The game is timed, and the timer ticks faster when the super speed button is depressed.

Another Excellent Entry In The Fast-Paced Mr. Do Arcade Series

Look: 9/10 Super cutesy look, fits the theme real well, I love the colors, and feels ahead of its time. I love the colors that flash during the celebration when you complete a level. Also, a funny animation/effect when you die (you basically bounce around the edges of the screen dramatically haha). Oh, and the silly pirate ship that's floating above kinda gave me Mario feels! I'm almost to the true Mario Bros era ahhhh. It's hard to get screenshots of these fast-paced arcade games, especially since each Scene/Level has its unique look, it's definitely worth playtesting this to see the vibe for yourself enter image description here

Oooo and I love the carousel vibe level, the way the horse things bounce (and yes, that's me flying across the screen horizontally near the top lol: I had died so figured it was a chance to screenshot, and argh, my screenshot didn't really capture the carousel horses after all lol, youl'l just have to play it..) enter image description here

Finally, I love the Sword-seeming image by the trophy in the upper right of the last unique scene! Zelda vibes, and also game design culture RPG icon sets, so many free sprite sets of icons like that ha, love …

Sound: 9/10 Wow, I love love love the Gameover jingle (rare to be able to say that cuz I'm usually frustrated when I die haha). This chronology project is really making me wanna go back through all these years and include more arcade games, cuz they continue to shine from the 70s through the mid 80s. The Level-Completion jingle is great too. I also love the hi score jingle, all good stuff. Oh wow and I love Scene 3's song, quite ominous (or was that always the song? cuz Scene 5 had it too, it's one of those games that's so involving and fast-paced you often don't notice the tracks, plus the sound effects are nonstop.) And wow! I love love love the track for the final unique scene (Scene 6) so dreamy and perfect for the setting.

Play: 8/10 It's a bit overwhelming at first, but it realizes its concept well: the gravity/mechanics of the rollercoaster cars is reasonable and consistent even if hard to keep track of and quite overwhelming. As I always say, I prefer action games and platformers where you can actually fight back, rather than the boring (to me) hide and wait, move a bit, hide and wait, time appropriately, etc. type platformers. I had played for quite a while before the use of the hyper speed "fire button" became clear (I was wondering why the character seemed so darn slow haha). I kept hoping it was a way to defeat the cars or something, but I suppose that wouldn't make sense with the cutesy rollercoaster concept. The hyper speed wound up being very helpful and definitely changed the gameplay considerably, as I started rushing to finish up levels and have that fun, fast-paced action platformer feel that I've always loved from growing up with Super Mario World etc. (I was the type who always holds down run in that game, even to my demise haha.) Thank goodness the collision masks were quite well-done, albeit a bit frustrating. Tbh, both the collision masks and the interactions/mechanics when going onto a platform or quickly running up a ladder are super well-done (I have to keep in mind this is an arcade game, not microcomputer game heh), which makes the game that much more valid and worthy of trying again and again. It became really fun to see if I could race from one ladder to another before the car came to whack me haha. (Oh, well it turns out the hyper speed makes the timer go down faster, I thought that was just for a Bonus but apparently you die when you run out of that timer... didn't really care for that limitation on the run feature). It did start to get a bit too frustrating in the later levels, particularly due to the limited amount of mechanics (again, I love when there's some way you can time hitting back etc.). At a certain point, I stopped trying to get hi score, started ignoring the Cherries, and instead just focusing on finishing the 6 unique levels (well, I couldn't get myself to completely ignore them, the gamer in me wouldn't let me ha, but I stopped trying to get every Cherry on each screen). Not sure if that's more so due to the game not being great (which I think it is), or more so due to getting tired and wanting to finish playing this another day. (Or is it the concussion I had 3 days ago... haha). It was critical to gradually learn about the different "layers" cuz it seemed at first that any passing car can harm you, but there is in fact a pseudo-3d factor to this (cars behind you can't hit you etc.)--quite advanced for its time, even if frustrating to learn as a newcomer. This game would be that much more amazing if there were a jump feature! I'd say even more important than having a fight-back ability. The last scene was certainly as difficult and complex as I expected--as frustrating as they were, of course the moving platforms gave me intense Mario vibes, this set a great precedent with the mechanics of them and everything.

Feel: 9/10 I was both excited and disappointed to read that there were 6 unique levels before that classic-arcade habit of re-cycling the unique levels just with more/faster obstacles etc.: excited because that meant there was a clear goal I could set (complete the 6 unique levels) and that that's more than the older arcade games, but disappointed that it didn't declare an ending and instead has that classic arcade disappointment (for me) of being entirely about getting the highest score. Oddly enough, I'm beginning to appreciate and enjoy that concept, more and more, another reason I've been considering going back through these years and adding more arcade games. But with almost 5,000 games on my backlog, and they're only going to get longer as I get into later years, probly best to finish this current backlog first ha. I have a lifetime after all.

Attachment: 8/10 As frustrated as I was after losing all my lives twice, the fact I kept re-trying (especially even tho it was dinnertime! haha) says something. I wanted to complete those 6 unique screens! Even with how difficult it got around level 4 and 5. The quality of these arcade games I've been playing recently, especially when compared to the last several years' home computer games, is making me want to play arcade solely for a while! But I must press on... I'm glad this sequel to Mr. Do lived up to the original's great quality, look, and gameplay. Not that Mr. Do's Castle was bad, by any means, just not so much my thing, not so spectacular, and just too much for me. Maybe I should give it another try. Anyway, this one and the original Mr. Do are games I won't forget and want to replay, so I rank them among the standout games so far. And yay! I managed to complete all 6 Scenes I played for a couple more lives then stopped after this screenshot heh, it was just the same scenes sped up enter image description here

Completion: Through all 6 unique Scenes, Score 38, 098 Playtime: ~2 hours
