Slay the Spire 2 (Early Access)

7/10

Build idea for Regent: Miniature Cannon with any upgraded multi-hit attack. Miniature Cannon adds 3 damage for each upgraded card. Upgraded cards are scaled, but multi-hits are scaled even better. Peck can deal 20 base damage instead of 8. Vigor would greatly help with the build. Monarch's Gaze can reduce multiple enemy strength with a single multi-hit attack. And there's …

Peck can deal 20 base damage instead of 8. Vigor would greatly help with the build. Monarch's Gaze can reduce multiple enemy strength with a single multi-hit attack. And there's the fact that multi-hits work well with Beat into Shape by forging multiple times. The gears in my mind keep spinning for a Regent build that isn't based around the Sovereign Blade and I love it. I feel like I opened up a new eye. A sixth sense. I'll be seeing dead people soon enough.

It's great, because the first one was great, but it really just is more of the same. I played the first Slay the Spire a decent amount, but not nearly as much as a lot of other people. After playing this one for 10 hours, I can see myself playing this one for a long time. I've really enjoyed my time playing so far, and the co-op is such an awesome addition. The current pool of 5 characters are pretty interesting, I definitely have my favorites and least favorites, but that can still definitely change as I better learn how to play as each of them. I think the enemy and boss visual and gameplay designs are quite fun. The one thing I haven't liked so far is that you have to do runs to unlock more stuff, which sounds kind of idiotic to say because that's how every Rougelite is, but idk I feel like you are too hampered by the amount of cards you can get on each character in the first 2-3 runs of a character. Overall though, having a very fun time so far, high 8/10.

Y todavía no he probado el multijugador. Va a ser un viaje increible.

I really love StS1 and by extension the second one as well. It really did define a genre and provide fun gameplay for an infinite amount of hours. StS2 is that again, but with some minor upgrades. The game is still in early access, so I will wait until the full release to cement my thoughts on this game of course.

However, I'm conflicted as to how I feel about the additions and changes. I like it overall for sure, but to an extent it kind of feels a little hollow. Sure there's a few new characters, bosses, cards, and relics, but the feeling that it's almost too similar to the first one definitely persists a little bit. The conflict in my head mainly comes from the fact that I really don't know what I would want to be changed, added, removed, tweaked, or any other modifying word that would really make it feel standout and fresh. The old characters don't really feel too different, as I ended up beating the game with near identical builds from the previous game. Maybe that's my own fault for not actively trying to branch out and try new things, but at the same time It's hard for me to have that aim while also trying to win. Obviously I try different builds and sets for each character, but specifically with the old characters it feels like their previous build paths are almost too similar.

With this in mind though, the new stuff that was added is indeed fun and I've already beat the game with every character at least once. With the new characters introduced I've been having a good time learning their build paths and what I specifically enjoy building, but there is something floating in the back of my mind that holds me back from fully giving in to the bliss of the new characters. It almost feels like a portion of the builds are, again, too similar to the old characters. The Necrobinder has a doom build that is essentially very similar to The Silent's poison build, while The Regent has a build that is very similar to The Ironclad's strength build with their forging mechanic. The other builds on both of these characters definitely feel much more fresh and unique, but this is still an observation I've had.

All in all, it's essentially an improvement on the first game with a slew of new things and I think for the price and with my already existing love of the original game I believe it is very much worth getting an playing.

I look forward to seeing what the remained of early access brings and how the devs will move forward with the game!

Of the 3 returning characters, Defect gets the biggest changes. It is much less likely that you will get focus that lasts entire fights. There's a greater emphasis on focus that lasts 1 turn. The problem with this though is that it doesn't scale with Loop because Loop's effect happens at the start of each turn, not at the end. Dark orbs would go even crazier, but frost feels neutered with these focus changes. If you want Loop to scale, you need focus that lasts the whole fight. Thing is though, Defragmentation (gain 1 focus, 2 if upgraded) is now a rare card instead of uncommon. Biased Cogniton is now an event card and even then, there is no method to remove debuffs.
