Roll Away is a 3D platform puzzle video game which places the player in control of a Kula beachball. The main objective of the game is to collect keys which unlock the level exits, as well as coins and jewels along the way. The game makes use of alternative physics, changing the direction of gravity as the ball moves.

Three and a half hours and 45 levels in, and I'm really rather enjoying this. I think I appreciate it a lot more than I would have back in 1998, when I was aged [redacted]. Being able to dip in for a run of 5 levels during my lunch break was fun.

Finally getting round to playing some of the old PS1 games that I've amassing over recent years. The first on my list, for some reason, is Kula World, a.k.a. Roll Away. (I'm playing the PSN version using DuckStation – I'm glad I splurged on a load of games before Sony closed the PS Store for PSP, as physical copies of this are really expensive now.) This was one of those games that I never owned during its generation, despite enjoying and frequently replaying the demo.

Despite a few odd design choices (such as the inability to press Down to move backwards, for which I can think of no justification unless there was some technical reason for it), I think this holds up quite well. I realised how spoilt I've become by modern design and QOL practices when I got confused about how to save my progress – until I checked the manual and read that I needed to reach a save point to do so.

After a little more than an hour of playing, I'm up to level 21 of over 200.

(It was interesting to check the credits on MobyGames; for a couple of the core team members, this seems to have been the first credit of notable careers.)

Not bad but it is far too hard and I got irritated with it
