Strange Telephone is a unique little game, I'll give it that. I picked this up on the Switch because I saw people compare it to Yume Nikki, a favorite of mine. This is a pixel-based 2D side-scroller, that simply has you walking from one dreamscape to the next, and using a (strange) telephone to dial numbers that transport you to specific locales you want to revisit later. Or, you can just dial random numbers and see where you end up. The goal of the game is to collect items that will allow you access to locked-away areas, and ultimately reach some kind of ending.

The main problem with this game is that it's extremely repetitive. Each dreamscape is just a few steps long, so you'll jump from a forest to a mechanical area to an open field to the inside of a house all in the space of ten seconds. And that's like a third of the "biomes" already. And while I'll admit there's some strange stuff to see, it's overall a lot tamer than I expected -- and hoped. And even with adjusted expectations though, I just didn't find much of interest to latch onto in this one. The puzzles aren't great, and the endings range from lousy to okay. In the game's favor, I will say the pixel art is very nice though! There are a lot of nifty animated gifs you could make from this game, that would certainly look cool in a message board signature. (Are those still a thing?)
