Peak is a cooperative climbing game for up to four players. After crash-landing on an unknown island, players take the role of scouts attempting to ascend the mountain at its center. The mountain is semi-procedurally generated and changes every 24 hours, featuring five distinct biomes with unique obstacles and enemies. Players manage stamina, collect climbing tools like ropes and pitons, and must work together to survive hazards while ascending.

Finished a few runs with some friends. I have as of yet to complete a full run without dying, but I've gotten close.

The grapple gun only mode is crazy as hell.

Reaching the top

I loved the "Easy to learn, hard to master." mechanics, borrowed directly form Zelda. The game has it's charm with simple graphics. This game must be played with a friend, and it's very entertaining. Looking around finding a way and using gadgets to climb is a great experience. The difficulty spikes a bit too much in the second level, but …

Just climbin'

I think it's a gread idea to make the climbing mechanic as we know it from BoTW and other games the core gameplay of a coop game. It works suprisingly well! Great game for a few hours with your friends.

Played on PC. Fun with friends. Nothing super special but silly and fun. The effects on the in-game voice chat are comedic genius.

Super fun but not a lot of content

I had a blast playing this with my buds for about 10 hours or so. Once you've completed a run though, I felt I had "beat" the game and didn't feel the need to return to it. There's only 4 biomes, so once you've spent a bit of time in them and become familiar, there's not a lot of replay …

There's only 4 biomes, so once you've spent a bit of time in them and become familiar, there's not a lot of replay value. Mind you, it was a very fun 10-15 hours. It's decently challenging too, which heightens the feeling of peril later in the run. If the devs add content I will definitely return to it, a simple co-op rock climbing game is a novel idea that has lots of potential for innovation.

I'd play this game way more often if it had checkpoints.
First level is a chore by now, typical issue with roguelike games.

Exhausting, ironically

Since this game is hyped everywhere, I'm gonna focus more on the shortcomings.

The game features a "climb wherever you want" (if you have enough stamina) mechanic, and plenty of tools to help you. It's a fun mechanic, but it's made frustrating by a number of things:

The game features a "climb wherever you want" (if you have enough stamina) mechanic, and plenty of tools to help you. It's a fun mechanic, but it's made frustrating by a number of things:

  1. No checkpoints.
Died in biome 2+? Start over. And losing is quite easy. Have an unlucky fall that takes away half of your stamina and you're dead weight now.
  2. No saves.
I've read that experienced players complete the game in 1.5 hours or so. For me it took 2 hours to clear 2 biomes, and I think there are 4-5 biomes total. Don't often have energy to play such an intense game for 2+ hours in a row. Combined with point 1, this is quite bad.
  3. Random maps sometimes feel impossible.
Maybe we're just bad at finding the right path or the game is balanced around 3-4 player parties, but as 2 player group, we found ourselves doing very hard tricks to climb somewhere, only to find it a dead end. It often felt like the level is not doable without a lot of item assistance and we're limited in inventory space, because we play as 2 player group. Maybe this one is skill issue.
  4. Fog and hunger mechanics are anti-fun.
Fog is basically a game over timer. It rises and if you're in in, you lose stamina due to freezing, meaning that if you're struggling to climb, now you're even worse off. Hunger is the same thing, but you just get hungry no matter what you do, so you need to dedicate some of your limited inventory space to food. Boo. There's "easy mode" that turns off fog and slows hunger though.

I'm frustrated, because the core gameplay is fun and addictive, but because of the factors above, we were left with a bitter feeling in the end. Hopefully they'll add saves and checkpoints in an update.

Cute fun with friends

You don't need me to explain Peak to you - odds are you've seen plenty of it. Despite the "friendslop" label, the game takes good advantage of having a team without needing to resort to characters or classes. You just climb with your friends to the top. Can recommend!
