Episode Ignis builds off of the main story of Final Fantasy XV in a way that both expands on what little we knew of Ignis's effort to save Noctis during the attack on Altissia and helps give him some solo time to shine and develop his character some more. The combat stands out as a bit odd because he seems much stronger in this DLC than he ever does in the base game but it's easy to forgive when it's so much fun to play. There are also some odd mechanics surrounding taking back sections of the city that feel totally unnecessary. Thankfully they don't get in the way of the main experience.

The highlight of this DLC for me is the combat, easily. Ignis excels at mobility and crowd control and the game takes advantage of this by throwing wave after wave of imperial soldiers at him. It's very easy to deal with them but switching between his various elemental knife infusions keeps things feeling fast-paced and fun for the short duration of the episode. I didn't explore the ability to swap to Ignis in the main game, but I kind of wish I had if he plays similarly there.

The story also feels like a success here. The base game alludes to the events which took place after Noctis defeated Leviathan but at last we get to see them firsthand. I wasn't a huge fan of Ignis before but I feel like the content of this DLC has propelled him up a bit in my list of favorites from this game. The story additions feel well thought out and worthwhile but also not quite so necessary that their exclusion from the base game makes it feel like less of a complete package. The …

The only downside for me is how short it is. I think this is an easy recommendation for fans of the game.

Hack & Slash - After confronting the Leviathan, Noctis is knocked out and in danger. Ignis steps up to the plate to save his beloved friend.

PROS:

++ Further characterization. I really liked the development Prompto and Ravus received in this episode. Clarifies as to what Ravus' motivations were. And Prompto really shined, especially in one of the final cutscenes when he equips the Ring of Lucii and called upon the kings for power in order to save Noctis from Ardyn. Great reveal as to how he lost his eyes.

++ Fun combat. When there were tons of enemies on the screen, the combat really shone because his skills tailors to crowd control. Ignis' moveset was fun, particularly the lightning (which made him blitz enemies that are across the map) and cold powers (that eviscerated crowds).

CONS:

-- Single target combat. Ignis' combat style is actually really fun, but it suffers when fighting a single target like the Mechs or the two bosses (Ravus & Ardyn).

-- Unnecessary mechanics. You could see an overview of the battles taking place in Altissia, but it was kind of pointless and served little purpose.

-- Deleted save. First time I tried saving, it ended up deleting my save and crashing the game.
