I started playing Donkey Kong Adventure because I wanted to play Sparks of Hope but my obsessivenes stops me from doing the second thing if I haven’t done the first one. Plus, I already had it there waiting for me. So I started playing it. Now, back when I was playing Mario + Rabbids, my daughter had so much fun watching me play and screaming “Mario! Mario!” every time she wanted me to play it, so I asked her if she wanted to assist me. For the first couple of battles, I played and asked her for suggestions and ideas. Then, of course, she took the controller and I became a couch coach (but she gave me back the controller during the hardest battles). We had so much fun, we loved the Donkey Kong specific mechanics, I though it was a smart way to change the gameplay and add stuff. But the most important thing is the fact that I had the impression there were less boxes to push around. Now, less boxes is still too many boxes but at least it’s less boxes.
Such a fun spin on the xcom and Mario games! Spending the whole game with just three characters really gave focus and let you see the synergies of the characters. My biggest complaint is that the game got too easy by the end, and the missions could have been more varied.
I expected something short-and-sweet, but this DLC is nearly big enough to be its own game. I love the addition of DK, whose new abilities makes this game feel fresh, and not just new levels on top of the original system. The only odd decision was to put a lock on which characters you can use, so you're stuck with just DK, Rabbid Peach, and Cranky and you lose one thing that makes gameplay in the original game interesting, which is the ability to employ different strategies based on who you've selected to fight with. Overall, really fun so far.
