Why does this page look different?
We're in the process of merging Giant Bomb game entries to IGDB entries. This is an older Giant Bomb page. It's safe to use, and all data will eventually be moved to the corresponding IGDB entry.
I got into this game because of YouTube and the first time I played without dlc I dropped it within a week. This year I decided to go all in and oh my god was it worth it. Absolutely my most played new game this year (not counting Geometry Dash per usual lol.) this game has MASTERED how to do a rogue like without making you feel frustrated. I understand the appeal of others, but games like hades have frustrated me because I can’t tell how fast I should be progressing or wether or not I’m bad at the game. Issac conbats this by forcing you to win a lot. Every time you beat a boss the next boss unlocks, so you follow the same path as the run but now with differant rooms and items, and you have a chance to get further. The “winning” aspect is what I appreciate the most because you haven’t actually beaten the game. But it forces you to restart while actually giving you a sense of accomplishment and progression rather than “oh no you died here are some skill points.” Honestly a great game that I would 100% recommend to indie title fans and fans of anything even remotely similar
The Binding of Isaac is a weird game with a twisted art style, story and enemies. You fight your way out of your mother's uterus, while fighting against bleeding anuses, cysts, headless people, tape worms and other vile creations. The goal is the same every time, fight your way through various levels and eventually break free of your prison.
This DLC, Repentance, adds a whole new Dungeon system to explore and actually changes the game a bit instead of just some new items and reskins. It offers a ton of new content and with the Repentance + addon, you can even play online, a huge improvement and feature.
This specific DLC I can stand behind and would recommend for the main game.
Genuinally, The Binding of Isaac have been one of my most favorite games that i have seen when i was a kid back then; and oooh boy... that game kept on my head and back in 2021 i found it out.
I bought it on the PS4, and i have gotten completly onto it and because of it i have gotten more and more into roguelikes, and as well games made by the creator himself. Edmund Mcmillen, each day closer to DEAD GOD!...
Welp, I've fallen back into my addiction to this game I guess. I've managed to pack 500+ hours of playtime across PC and Switch over the years since its release and I'm sure there'll be many many more to come. I did somehow 100% the base game way back then but in the time since the DLCs have multiplied the amount of stuff to the point where I'm nowhere close anymore.
At this point I feel like this game has ruined roguelikes for me because there just so much content and so many item combinations that any time I go to play a different one it just feels underwhelming in comparison. Just felt like ranting a little about this gem of a game since it's coming up on 10 years old later in 2024. :)
I started a new save file to play Repentance since it's been about 3 years since I last touched Isaac. I'm having a ton of fun with the new content I've seen so far. I'm looking forward to getting to the larger portions of the new content, but I'm a bit worried that I won't be able to enjoy it.
I already had issues with the visual clarity in Isaac, and Repentance just seems to make it worse. That's seriously disappointing. I very much believe that it's basic game design to have enemies and their attacks be easily discernable, perhaps outside of specific stealth enemies (which should be used sparingly). Having red enemies shoot red bullets and leave red damaging creep in a red room was already frustrating, but now there are blue enemies shooting blue bullets in blue rooms with reflections? Also Curse of Darkness is worse? Also also, full screen flashing in one of the new areas? I'm not photosensitive, but I feel bad for those who are. From what I've seen on streams, the new areas seem to absolutely fill the screen with bullet hell levels of enemies and bullets on top of all that. Half the enemies burst into multiple new enemies when you kill them and the other half can fill the screen with hard to follow projectiles.
All that said, I really am having fun with all of the new combos and items. I've still been able to win at least 80% of my normal difficulty runs, despite being rusty. It's just already frustrating to take damage from low visibility sources, and I'm worried that'll be enough to make me drop out when I really get to the meat of the new content.
