I wanted to find wonder and mystery in this game, but I found an open world game painted in Harry Potter.
I was simultaneously blown away and disappointed to find such a perfectly created Harry Potter game, with gameplay I did not like.
The World
The game is beautiful, and if I was able to play on high end hardware I expect that might have carried me through the game. But given I'm on entry level gaming hardware (a $800 laptop....) the game is just a poor experience. The load times especially are cruel, due to the sheer number of fast travels required for certain quests.
The story
I can't really comment on the story, as I played almost non of it, instead I was buried in a stream of random tasks. The extended 10 hour tutorial is perhaps the biggest reason for me quitting the game. I never quite felt the rails fall away.
Combat
In most RPG's you are given a choice, a way to specialize and really make a game your own.
Talents are half baked, each spell has one improvement option. There is no option to build or spec into a character type.

Combat
In most RPG's you are given a choice, a way to specialize and really make a game your own.
Talents are half baked, each spell has one improvement option. There is no option to build or spec into a character type.
All spells function within a auto aiming combat system. If feels a little like playing a fighting game. As the ranged combat is more like melee combat with a block and counter system.
I think my fundamental issue is that 90% of the damage you do comes from the basic spell slinging. The spells are limited to force bolt A or force bolt B. No snakes. No turning into a dragon. No defense orientated gameplay. I felt a little disappointed I couldn't build a fire based combat character.
Outside of it: stone is moving into a door, tree's are growing into buildings and all sorts of madness is happening. That would have been nice in the combat system.
Crafting
The process for making and using your potions, items and upgrades is unbelievably clunky. I expect that these systems will end up paying off. But for the early part of the game they feel like a confusing mess that made me not want to play.
Gear
Why is there a looter shooter gear system. No. Seriously, what is this doing in my Harry Potter game...
The emotive structure of yur engagement in the world
I expect that the meaningful stories are in there, but why are they hidden? Drama, love, romance, excitement, adventure and companionship are the emotions of the Harry Potter films. Why do I feel so lonely and isolated playing this game.
The music
Great as to be expected.
Ancient magic
I don't like how ancient magic is the theme of this game. It is fundamentally disrespectful to the magical system of harry potter and what could be done with it. I'm not the biggest fan of "I am chosen" narratives. I actually like Harry Potter because that narrative thread is so deeply buried that you hardly ever see it. Here it is the central premise of your engagement in the world and interaction with characters.
Overall
A great game that is not for me.
If you love to wonder around this is the game for you! I do not like to do that and therefore I did not like it that much. It is a beautiful world that has been built and there are some interesting quests. Overall it was too open world for my taste.

This is actually a pretty fun game, you can murder people/creatures quite brutally.
Next week we get another mystery game.
Got to a weird battle arena and got my butt kicked after several tries. I love the battle mechanics in this game but maybe I’m not very good at them? Also, I’m starting to realize that the enemies may very well scale with your level so getting overleveled may not be a thing…
I do not have a ton of time to play this game but I’m still really loving it. It’s incredibly well done and so much fun to play alongside reading the books with my son, thanks to it being a different story in the same places.
My oldest got this for his 10th birthday and since we are reading the books together right now I think maybe I’ll give it a try too. Played enough to make my character and get sorted into Ravenclaw. I find the premise that you enter Hogwarts as a fifth year kind of a bummer if I’m honest. Kind of wish we were kids.
Played 15 hours, didn't finish.

I really hope a sequel would focus more on the Hogwarts experience but its probably just going to be bigger map, new spells, and more boring filler content to complete.
The beginning of the game is amazing. As a Harry Potter fan this game is a must play, if only for the exploration of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. The combat is fun (kind of puzzle-y with matching spell colors and enemy shields) and trying to make an overpowered build is great too. Puzzles are also fun and there are a lot of secrets to discover.
The story isn't really engaging imo and then the game got more into the open world part I started to loose interest. The gear u get is random and until you're max level it doesn't really matter what u wear. At max level just get the highest grade gear and transmorph it to look good. I also miss NPC interactions. About 50 hours in I stopped.
Great game and it's nice to have a open world game in the Harry Potter universe, I just kind of see this as a good start for a sequel.
Far from a perfect game. There is a lot of unnecessary bloat and repetition. But I still had fun playing it. Though, I admit it was wearing out its welcome as I got to the end & I cannot imagine wanting to try to platinum the game with all the ridiculous collectibles.
Seems ok so far, but feels flat, the player character has no character and choices don't seem to matter. Would really like to roleplay going to Hogwarts starting as a first year instead of this, go to more than a handful of classes and get in trouble when caught sneaking out, or when using magical attacks in hallways and so on.
Once again completely and utterly stumped by the "animal imagery/numbers" rolling puzzles, proving that I am, in fact, a fucking idiot. I wish my brain worked the way everyone elses does. These are fucking incomprehensible to me. I don't know what I'm looking at.
This game is EXCELLENT but I will say the pacing is sooo strange. The opening is incredible, but then you hit the school and it gets so damn slow. Hopefully once I gain access to the full open world things speed up a bit again.
