I know it's blasphemous to say so, but this game is just... fine. For me personally, it's probably the most overrated game I can think of. The Road did the story first and better. Lee and Clementine from The Walking Dead did the 'badass father figure with questionable past and young girl who slowly become family' trope first and better. The gameplay was clunky and shots didn't feel weighty enough, and everything in here has just... been done before somewhere else. It's a fine game, even a good one, you won't find me claiming otherwise, but I just don't see the mind-blowing masterpiece everyone else seems to, and I genuinely don't understand the reputation this still has to this day. Have people just not played enough other games?

The graphics were stunning at release (I remember at the time saying it was the most realistic-looking game I'd ever seen), characters are relatively believable as people, the acting is brilliant. As a video game, though, it's a strong "meh", and the more it's lauded as the best of all time the more resentful I grow toward it.

There are just so many better games and so many better stories that are pushed to the side in favour of this trope-fest.

Bueno señores, naughty dog.

It was fun but the gameplay got repetitive and very predictable. The story was also quite predictable and not as good as I was expecting. Joel was a good character, but it didn't make up for the predictability and repetition.

Great with a couple gripes

The people at Naughty Dog really know how to write characters. Everyone in this game felt like a real person to me. I loved seeing the relationship develop between the two leads through subtle dialogue and interactions. My only gripes were the tedium of constantly stealth killing everything. I loved seeing the relationship develop between the two leads through subtle dialogue and interactions. My only gripes were the tedium of constantly stealth killing everything. It feels like the whole game you're just sneaking around. I would have liked a little more variety in the action. On top of that, I was over Joel's macho bullshit by the end of the game. The stoic, manly protector trope is tired and I would have liked to see some cracks in his character that let a more normal sensitive humanity come through.

Got me back into playing video games!

This has to be one of my all time favorite games. Everything about it is perfect from the story to the gameplay to the controls and graphics. Loved every minute of it. This game got me back into playing video games. Now I have to catch up on all the great ones I missed over the years!

The Last of Us takes you through a journey that will definitely tax you emotionally. Whether it's your first time through this game, or are excited for the release of Part 2 and want another go at it, The Last of Us is definitely worth your time.

The relationship between Joel and Ellie is the focal point, which was by far the best decision that they made for this game (the other decisions were great too though). Father-daughter relationships always get me and this is the most fleshed-out one of all (tied for my favourite with Geralt and Ciri). Overall and amazing game that is tense and thrilling yet beautiful.

Holy crap Joel has to be dead. Just got to the point where he fell off the second floor balcony and ended up impaled on a piece of metal. I thought for sure he was done in the world TLOU takes place in. The segment that followed where you play as Ellie was pretty fun, even though I usually hate when games take away all your leveled up goodies. Her knife was almost unfairly effective, and I'm left wondering why she would leave it in David's head. If I killed 112 people with a knife, I would certainly have retrieved it. I stopped for the night right before we entered Salt Lake City, and I'm kind of surprised at how healthy Joel looks. We'll see if there are any lingering effects when I pick it back up.

No big deal, I start taking them out. All of the sudden I realize one of the big guys is around. I get scared because the first one I came across, back in the gymnasium in Bill's town, game me a lot of trouble and I died two or three times before I unloaded everything I had at him. This one? Two molotovs and a nail bomb. BOOM.

Except for brief stints with the GameCube and a Nintendo DS I basically gave up on console gaming after Sega messed up with the Dreamcast. But when I saw my friends play The Last of Us: Remastered on the PS4, I knew I wanted to own a console again. Yes, that's how much I was drawn to the game before I even played it myself.

It's easy to be disappointed when expectations are that high, but overall I'd say The Last of Us lived up to them: I really enjoyed the story, and while some people like to point out that parts of it are predictable, I think that just comes with the genre. The graphics are stunning, sometimes I wished that the world would be a bit more open for exploration. But there's also something to be said for tight straight-forward story lines, at least for the more casual style of gamer I have become in my mid-thirties. Speaking of casual gamers, I did find some of the encounters a bit hard, but they weren't frustrating enough to consider giving up. That said I think I'd have preferred slightly more puzzles and a bit less fighting, but maybe that's just me.

Overall I found this game to be very enjoyable, especially for its cinematic qualities. Maybe not quite as satisfying if you are a hardcore gamer, though even then Survivor or Grounded mode should provide enough of a challenge.

Update: The "Left Behind" DLC is somewhat strange. While it ties in nicely with the main story and the three issue comic book, it's rather forgettable in terms of gameplay. You might as well just watch a playthrough video on YouTube.

Naughty Dog makes good games. Really good games. The Last of Us premise sounded fairly basic, and not something I usually go for: post-apocalyptic zombies vs regular people. Of course, they had a new twist--the zombies were victims of a fungal brain infection. Still not enough I would likely have tried it ... Except these are the people who made the Uncharted games.

Graphics:
Gorgeous. A dirty, post-apocalyptic world never looked so good. Seriously, the shadows and reflections are stunning.

Story:
Let's just say I was still thinking about the ending days later. The characters are fully realized, with unique and compelling personalities, true to themselves. Both protagonists have moments when you might not even like them, but you always kind of love them. You feel them. Especially, Ellie, who is surprisingly sassy.

Gameplay:
Heavy focus on stealth, with plenty of combat and a few environmental puzzles, though nothing as deep as Uncharted. Everything performs so smoothly the control scheme disappears. You can almost forget you're playing a game.

Because resources like ammo are scarce, you're always trying to deal with or avoid enemies in quiet ways without alerting them. Like silent takedowns, which are a real pleasure, and take just long enough to make you nervous someone's buddy will spot you doing it.

There are also some upgrades available, both to your character, and even more fun, to your individual weapons. You can increase the clip capacity, reload speed, and so forth. A system that carries over into Newgame +, which I actually tried out a bit just to continue enjoying the enhancement system.

Then as I continue to play I start to find myself fallen deeper and deeper in love with this game. It even gets you emotionally attached to the main characters, David and Ellie. (spoiler) - I was surprised by the amount people that dies in this game, especially when you see the african american boy turn into a zombie and the brother has to kill him and then turns the gun on himself.......WOW. This game has it all, and the only reason it is not a five star is because it has a continuing ending. If they make a Last of Us 2 then great but if not then I felt like everything I did in the Last of Us was POINTLESS.
