Sopravvalutato

Voto: 8/10

So Grim!

Pretty good overall! Great soundtrack. Tho most of the side character deaths feel ickier, much more like fridging. What a grim ass series.

Naughty Dog makes another Naughty Dog game

I have not played it since it first came out and with some distance, I got to see how my feelings about the game have changed.

At the time I thought the ending painted Joel as the anti-hero but playing it again in 2020 and watching the first ten minutes of that game I changed my feelings. The game tells a very simple "Dad video game" plot though very ahead of its time but might accidentally be saying something profound about the failure of systemic leadership.

Anyway, the beginning really set up the ending but I am not sure if it is intentional because the writing in this game is so bad. I think at the time before Uncharted 4 I appreciated that they were trying to fix the ludo narrative dissonance by making everyone a murder sociopath in a murder world. Compared to Uncharted it seemed clever but ultimately it is pretty shallow.

The audio and visuals still hold up. The guns sound good and the narrow corridor level design does look really nice, even if you can see its Crash Bandicoot roots.

I liked it enough then, I still like it now, but other than all the time and money spent on the audio and visuals and animations and VO, it really never really rises as something special, just expensive.

1SR - The Last of Us

1 Sentence Review:

While ambitious and drop dead gorgeous, the narrative feels rather stale and predictable after the opening act.

I still think about this all the time

Just last night I was telling someone about how hard it was for me as a player to be in control of Joel when he (spoiler alert) turned on the Fireflies to rescue Ellie. Just last night I was telling someone about how hard it was for me as a player to be in control of Joel when he (spoiler alert) turned on the Fireflies to rescue Ellie. It's probably because I'm not a parent myself, but in order to reverse engineer immunity and save all of humankind, I would have let them do the autopsy. Still, I had invested dozens of hours and I wanted to see how the game turned out, so I very reluctantly killed my way to her. (I even tried to spare the surgeons, who were no real threat to me, but found that the game hadn't anticipated I would try such a thing and had Joel murder them as soon as he came close enough.)

The opening sequence had me bawling my eyes out, and I still recall the sense of wonder at the giraffes, and Ellie's love of jokebooks. This game was deeply touching, as well as intensely stressful due to the limited resources. A wasted bullet or an extra shiv could be the difference between life and death, and I found it to be the perfect difficulty for me.

Check out the "alternate ending" on youtube if you haven't already!

Holy crap Joel has to be dead. Just got to the point where he fell off the second floor balcony and ended up impaled on a piece of metal. I thought for sure he was done in the world TLOU takes place in. The segment that followed where you play as Ellie was pretty fun, even though I usually hate when games take away all your leveled up goodies. Her knife was almost unfairly effective, and I'm left wondering why she would leave it in David's head. If I killed 112 people with a knife, I would certainly have retrieved it. I stopped for the night right before we entered Salt Lake City, and I'm kind of surprised at how healthy Joel looks. We'll see if there are any lingering effects when I pick it back up.

No big deal, I start taking them out. All of the sudden I realize one of the big guys is around. I get scared because the first one I came across, back in the gymnasium in Bill's town, game me a lot of trouble and I died two or three times before I unloaded everything I had at him. This one? Two molotovs and a nail bomb. BOOM.

Except for brief stints with the GameCube and a Nintendo DS I basically gave up on console gaming after Sega messed up with the Dreamcast. But when I saw my friends play The Last of Us: Remastered on the PS4, I knew I wanted to own a console again. Yes, that's how much I was drawn to the game before I even played it myself.

It's easy to be disappointed when expectations are that high, but overall I'd say The Last of Us lived up to them: I really enjoyed the story, and while some people like to point out that parts of it are predictable, I think that just comes with the genre. The graphics are stunning, sometimes I wished that the world would be a bit more open for exploration. But there's also something to be said for tight straight-forward story lines, at least for the more casual style of gamer I have become in my mid-thirties. Speaking of casual gamers, I did find some of the encounters a bit hard, but they weren't frustrating enough to consider giving up. That said I think I'd have preferred slightly more puzzles and a bit less fighting, but maybe that's just me.

Overall I found this game to be very enjoyable, especially for its cinematic qualities. Maybe not quite as satisfying if you are a hardcore gamer, though even then Survivor or Grounded mode should provide enough of a challenge.

Update: The "Left Behind" DLC is somewhat strange. While it ties in nicely with the main story and the three issue comic book, it's rather forgettable in terms of gameplay. You might as well just watch a playthrough video on YouTube.

SOME MINOR SPOILERS
ALSO NOTE I HAVEN"T PLAYED THE ORIGINAL, ONLY REMASTERED*
The Last of Us is saved from being a generic third person adventure shooter by how well the gameplay ties into its story and theme. The "him or me" mentality is absolutely captured. Combat is very intense, primarily because resources are so scarce. Every bullet fired feels like a choice, in a way that choice oriented games can't capture (not that I don't love those games). Large scale infected battles are especially intense.
The environments are very well detailed, and the voice acting is just... perfect. My hair stood on end during first death scene. The game is very atmospheric and the chemistry between Joel and Ellie is fantastic. Each supporting character is surprisingly well developed as well.
The multiplayer is also quite fun. While the characters and environments aren't quite as well polished as the story mode, it too captures the him or me feeling that I just don't get from games like Call of Duty with popular online play. You have to seriously rely on your team and manage your resources. I didn't like interrogation very much.
TLOU isn't without a few problems, with occasional bugs, especially in multiplayer, and an AI system that doesn't always seem to remember its own rules. Enemies will fail to see your companions if they haven't spotted you yet or ignore the body they just walked by, your companions will sometimes force you out of cover so that you're spotted, enemies will occasionally see you when they shouldn't, and become seemingly blind in situations they should.
These issues don't really take much away from the experience though. While it isn't my favorite game or anything, TLOU is deserving of every bit of praise it gets from critics, and is undeniably a great game.

Just finished this. Amazing game, really beautiful. I'm now stuck between what my GOTY is so far - this or Bioshock Infinite!

I've been pretty good about not buying games recently, but I might have to break down and get this one.
