Read LessFinished! And it was a joy throughout. Creative, up beat, beautiful, big band beats! Even the unique battle system wasn't that frustrating in the end.
It did tail off a bit at the end. But overall, I liked it. Only miserable farts hate on something for what it isn't.
Even if it looks simple, I could find depth in its themes. I wonder if Color Splash will have something at least similar, because one of the best things OK has done for me is to feel curiosity about the most disliked PM's.
About the combat system, I think it expects more of you than any other average combat system. Feels really nice to solve each one.
It felt good at first but it started really dragging and just becoming... boring. Probably good for a kid but not for me, not enough challenge, boring combat, etc.
Voto: 6/10
Well, Another Installment to the series. As always i hope for the day that they finally give us something on the same scale of Paper Mario 64, Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door or even Super Paper Mario (at this point, i think I'd be ecstatic just for a HD port or collection of these three games on switch.).
This is the 6th Paper Mario title, and how did it do? Definitely not as great as the first three Paper Mario Titles imo, but Thankfully not as bad as the last two Paper Mario titles, this one stands in the middle of the series for me. Once again for the third time, Nintendo has failed to give us a Paper Mario game that brings back the Exp points, the level ups, the whole reason for wanting to participate in the enemy encounters. But it improved on the Weapons. While they still, sadly, are attacks that will be destroyed after using them, unlike in the last two games, it's not just 1 time use and then it's gone, you actually get a decent amount of uses before the attack breaks, and thankfully plain jump and hammer commends are actually there, so …

The big gimmick for this game is the Ring battles/puzzles, terrible idea, just keep the original battle concept, the battles did get boring by the end, but not as quick as they did in the last two games. The other big concept was the whole Confetti schtick which is fine, whatever, we had this since the last game with filling the colorless spots with paint, so they're just trying to keep ideas from the last two games still going forward. The enemies were pretty boring with the origami idea, i just want to fight the paper enemies in normal battles. The bosses!...were complete Trash. Freaking objects that are used to make origami: Stapler, Tape, Rubber Band, etc. it was so dang lame and boring, gimme back unique boss battles, not real life objects.
Now, Those were some of my negative feelings towards the game i guess, let me say what i did enjoy about the game. This game has a good amount of collectables, like i never even finished getting all the collectables, maybe i'd go back to this game someday just to get them.
The exploration of this world is great, and for the first time in a long time, The world in a Paper Mario title actually feels linear and the world is big. Probably even more reason why it saddens me that nintendo still for whatever reason decides to exclude unique paper mario characters in this series anymore and a fun rpg battle system with exp and levels, this could've been better to me if they did. The areas are really impressive though and heck, the water temple's water looked soo good like seriously!
They did somewhat bring back the partner aspect of the good Paper Mario games, where we do actually get our Partners. But one, they're hardly unique, and two, you can't control what they actually do. They don't have their own health gauge and they can't take damage. So it's not really that great.
I'm not sure yet how I'd feel to do a second run in the future. The Story was okay, The exploration was Great and beautiful, everything else, is a improvement from the last two games, but don't come close enough to the original three games. And the battle system in this game game is the part that really makes me drop my rating, you can have beautiful scenery and a okay story, but if the battling is boring as heck, it's not going to make me wanna go through this game again like the older games did. In the end, I'd give this game a Unfortunate 5/10, I really wish i could've gave this a higher score, it definitely had the potential if they just brought back exp and level ups..Maybe we'll get a little bit closer in the 7th title? :/
Somehow, the humor never gets old. That's what drove me to finish this game. Kudos to nintendo for innovating with a very original battle system that is easy to get into but very hard to master. Story is nothing memorable but good enough. Overall a 30 plus hour journey that had me either smiling or laughing pretty much the whole time and that's something that I pretty much never see in any game I play.
The game was great! It definitely felt like one of the classic paper Mario games. The combat I was afraid I would hate but ended up loving it. It did get a bit boring towards half through the game but got sucked back in somehow. Might have been the different enemies or the unique bosses. Definitely felt like enemies were pointless to fight tho at some point I tried to avoid them as much as possible. There felt no point in fighting the regular enemies as there was no real benefit to it. I have never been one for trying to collect everything just cause but if you are into it theres plenty of that! Olivia ended up being the highlight of this game. She was a terrific partner and was adorable throughout the entire journey. Overall this game was a solid entry for a paper mario game. I hope intelligent systems continue to make paper mario games as they have always been solid.
Ugh... Paper Mario. I'm trying so hard to love you and want to continue playing you, but you make it difficult.
Your dialogue is so clever and I really enjoy the exploration aspect. But these dang ring battles are really getting on my nerves. I wouldn't mind so much if it was easier to avoid enemies, but they just seem to take so much time. I know I can have the toads help.. I just wish there weren't so many dang battles - or they gave something besides coins. They shoulda just saved the ring battles for the boss battles, because those are cool.
Also the text is really... REAALLY slow. I'm thinking of just watching a let's play instead so I can get the story without having to trudge through all these dang ring battles. Stay tuned.

Started playing this based on a couple recommendations and it's really cute and the dialogue is great. I just have a few gripes:
I really enjoyed this game -- there were times I got a little bit bored with the combat but one of the things that kept me coming back was the witty dialogue and the personalities of the characters. (I usually feel exhausted with cheesy dialogue but it was clever and funny even for adults like me). I took off one star because I wished we could have had more battle features with party members but other than that, I'm glad I got to enjoy The Origami King. :)
If this site had a 3 1/2 stars option, that’s where I’d put this. I’ve never been too interested in playing the Paper Mario branch of this beloved series, but after going through TOK and hearing that it isn’t even close to the best of them all from series veterans, my curiosity has been piqued to say the least. I had a blast playing, but unfortunately my enjoyment was heavily watered down by the combat system. While inventive and genuinely challenging (without being soul crushing), it is inherently repetitive and becomes boring. I found myself spamming the “flee” button whenever possible about halfway through. Because it’s such a core element of the gameplay, it puts a damper on everything else in here, which ranges from good to fantastic. Beautiful overworld, exciting and varied boss fights, cool powers, bouncy soundtrack, hilarious writing, lovable characters, and just about everything else you’d expect from Nintendo at this point. All that said, give it a go! It’s super approachable for gamers new and old both in gameplay and in story (all paper mario games are narratively disconnected) and is for the most part a joyful romp.
Alright y'all, I beat it. Review coming in the next couple days. Decided I'm gonna try to get all the trophies in the meantime. Really struggling to find some of these Toads.
Ok, how do you not love this game? All of a sudden I'm out here playing Wind Waker in a Paper Mario game.
Ugh. The boss battle system was terrible, and how it changed every time (the gimmick, like the ice maze or the fire feathers) so you’d never quite know what would work. But otherwise it was super cute and a sweet story.
Ok guys, I'm actually really enjoying it. It feels like if Nintendo made their own Freddi Fish game.
Funny dialogue, a delightful world, and a pleasant atmosphere reminiscent of the ol' Paper Mario. That's the pros.
The cons? The combat is a stinker. There's very little consequence for any of your weapon selections, the support characters do absolutely bupkiss, and the slide puzzle revolving circles are a headache. Towards the end I really thought I would have gotten more use to the mechanic, and I still sucked at it. Some of the bosses were genuinely annoying, particularly the Fire Vellumental, and it's always frustrating to have characters remarking on how annoying the level design and filler material are.
There's also some wild cognitive dissonance in that

I couldn't shake that, and found that some elements of the ending were similarly thoughtless. Also the villain is a total drag, with a lot of unfounded angst and a superiority complex that makes his monologuing incredibly grating. It's just not fun to hate him.
Anyhoo, besides the
I hope they added this after the pandemic.

Really having a great time with this game. Basically my first Paper Mario game (a few hours only with Super Mario Mario on the Wii and wasn't totally impressed). I love the level design, and the conversations are actually fun and hysterical. The pun department is really on their game!
My favorite part hands down is searching every nook and cranny for collectibles and hidden Toads. I had no idea this game would be such a collect-a-thon but I'm loving every second of it. Oh yeah and a status screen that shows percentages of items collected? Uh yeah, sign me the fuck up. It's awesome!
I do enjoy the battle system, but battling currently feels like a waste of time. It seems far more efficient to ignore the enemies if there's no leveling system or anything. Maybe this will change.
I am pleased to report that I am enjoying this game.
Decided to buy this and give it a fair shot, and see if I could appreciate it for what it is.
I know full well that it isn't the Paper Mario I grew up with, so my hopes weren't high in that regard.
Mainly I was just hoping for it to do what it does really well. And so far, after 5 hours, it does what it does well... but it's not really for me.
It really does just feel like an adventure game now, in the same vein as point-and-click adventures (which just isn't a genre I ever personally cared about), with the wacky character situations, quippy dialogue, light-weight story (so far), and strong focus on flair / surface details almost to the extent where that feels like its selling point. Also the soundtrack is good -- what would you expect, it's Paper Mario.
That stuff is nice on its own, but with extremely basic chore-like gameplay, it is very mind-numbing of an experience for me that I don't value (it doesn't help that it's extremely hand-holdy). I caught myself multiple times having the deadest straight face all the time playing it. And any semblance of an RPG that …

I caught myself multiple times having the deadest straight face all the time playing it. And any semblance of an RPG that it does have is more what feels like shoe-horned puzzle elements -- the battle system mainly. Once I do one battle -- hell, once I play one turn, the rest is all generally the same to me. My issue with them is that they don't create any illusion of player freedom. The nature of the battle puzzles implies a solved game each time it starts, and then it's just a matter of doing it. (It's difficult to explain.) The lack of any type of EXP incentivizes me to avoid enemies all the time, making battles more of a scripted experience, which is ... idk, fine I guess.
That's just the whole experience so far.
Just fine I guess.
Gonna return sell it later to get some money back. :p
