An Ode to Classic RPGs

Sea of Stars is an ode to classic RPGs. I’m over 30 years old, and when I was about 10, I had access to some JRPGs from the SNES era. I happily played Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Secret of Mana, etc. I believe there is nostalgia and fondness when we think about these simple yet remarkable works, which might explain why some people adored Sea of Stars, while others considered it a good game but not as bold or robust in its proposal.

Storyline

The game’s storyline is quite simple and straightforward. I won’t include any spoilers, but it’s set in a world with an Order that takes in babies born during the solstice period. Those born during the summer solstice are sponsored by the god Solen, while those born in the winter are sponsored by the goddess Luana. Solen is the solar god, and Luana is the lunar goddess (as we can deduce from their names).

In this context, Zale and Valere are born. It’s not very clear what they are, but they are treated as twins, suggesting some sort of sibling bond, even though there’s a months-long gap between their births. This implies …

This implies either they don’t have a conventional birth (perhaps created by some deity) or were born to different women, but they are considered “chosen ones” destined to become Solstice Warriors.

In summary, there’s this Order of Solstice Warriors that trains these special children born during the summer and winter solstices. These children are left in the city of Mooncradle by the Great Eagle. It’s the warriors’ duty to fight the monsters in the world, which, if left unchecked, could become world-destroyers.

This is the spark for a series of adventures involving many allied characters who join the journey. The world is full of islands, and players will experience sea voyages to various locations throughout the story.

In the end, it’s safe to say that Zale and Valere go far beyond what conventional Solstice Warriors have done. They face numerous situations involving loyal allies, betrayals, many trials, disappointments, etc., before managing to overcome the desperate plight of their world (and others).

Gameplay

The game’s combat is reminiscent of Super Mario RPG from SNES, as the techniques allow you to press a button to increase damage if pressed in sync with the attack’s hit. There are combos between characters, evoking the style of Chrono Trigger. You can unlock additional combos as the story progresses, but you need to stay alert because combos are found in chests scattered around the world. Like many RPGs, the party can consist of three warriors, while others stay in reserve. The difference here is that the game allows you to switch characters during combat, which helps rotate injured characters or shift tactics depending on the enemies. This is useful due to a lock system (slightly reminiscent of Octopath Traveler) during enemy spellcasting. As long as the enemy has these locks, their defense is much stronger, and attacks won’t work properly.

Movement is smooth, and I didn’t encounter any gameplay issues. With practice, things improve. There isn’t a minimap or similar system. There’s a map, and you can even be guided to the next tasks by a star that appears on an unknown island or location on the map, but it’s not like modern games with a sidebar menu showing where to go and what to do, like a mini-summary of active quests.

Achievements

The game has achievements on Steam and other platforms. I played on Steam (I initially started on Xbox Game Pass, yes, I had to start over, even recovering my save file) and found most of the achievements plausible. Generally, you need to do things like fish all species of fish at least once, beat the Wheels minigame champions in towns across the world, collect all items, etc. I stopped when I was only missing one achievement, which involved defeating 10 bosses with a relic activated. This achievement is easier to obtain in a NewGame+, and since I already replayed everything due to my migration from Xbox Game Pass, a third consecutive playthrough was too much for me, even though I really enjoyed the game.

Note: There was an update in November 2024, a free DLC from the developers. I stopped playing, but I’m very excited. There are also new achievements, so let’s see later how to pursue them.

Graphics

The graphics are stunning. It’s a cartoon-like effect with other visual enhancements that left a great impression on me. I believe many games are returning to this style of graphics, like Hades, Octopath Traveler, etc., exploring visuals from a time when games were simpler but more fun. Realistic graphics aren’t always synonymous with more enjoyment; on the contrary, they can be demotivating because video games aren’t just about imitating reality—they’re about being well-crafted works of fiction.

Music

I loved the soundtrack. Besides Eric W. Brown and Vincent Jones, there were some tracks with special participation from the legendary Yasunori Mitsuda, the very composer of Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. It’s always great to have quality music in more recent works alongside the legendary classics embedded in many players’ imaginations.

Final Thoughts

I understand the game may not appeal to all audiences. I believe players over 30 years old, like me, are more moved by the work. I saw many people saying the story is simple, the game isn’t very challenging (I believe it can be since you can adjust the difficulty by using or not using relics), etc. As a husband, father, and full-time worker, I spent 50 hours practically completing almost everything in the game. So, 50 hours of life for someone in my situation is still a lot. There’s an entire generation of adults who can’t dedicate 120 hours to video games, and there’s also the factor of getting tired of them. I realized I enjoyed simulation games and now sometimes play them to relax (e.g., Flight Simulator or Euro Truck to enjoy beautiful landscapes). That’s my profile, though it may not be everyone’s, even those my age. However, having an extremely nostalgic and high-quality work is enough for me to give it a 10/10. Congratulations to Sabotage Studio for such a well-made and lovingly crafted game.

The graphics are amazing and let down by poor story writing.

The graphics are pretty but the gameplay is interesting then becomes annoying late game.

But my main problem with this game is made by people who really love chrono trigger but do not understand why chrono trigger works well. They only remember the main story beats and cool moments not the little moments that built those big story beats that allowed those story beats to work.

Chrono trigger ain't my favourite game I think better rpgs have been released since its debut however this game really made me want this studio to be responsible for a remake of chrono trigger where they are not allowed to touch the script at all. I went in expecting a simple story and this was...sure an attempt a simple story. This is a first draft on a simple story by someone who clearly is not a writer tried, they just didn't really succeed. My complaints are not uncommon so i won't dwell on them in a review that no ones going to read most likely.

Sea of Stars Review

This was a pretty smooth experience. I didn't run into any boss battle that was too hard that I had to go grind for a few levels. Combat wasn't a struggle, but every battle took strategy to always keep it engaging. The game looks great. The only issue is the story never grabbed me. Garl is a really good character though.

Elevated Through Passion

Overall, the team's passion for classic console-style RPGs makes this game worth a playthrough. The music, level design, and overall narrative structure all really impressed me. The mini-game combat, however, is the obvious weak link here and gets old far before the experience is over. Looking past that, I'm just happy to play a modern 2D JRPG with a world that actually feels interactive, rewards exploration, and even has PUZZLES.

Worth the time (mine)

tldr

Awesome story, environment, characters and details. Hope they plan for a sequel, there's many worlds to explores

anyway, improvement such as increase walking speed, combat pacing, more enemies battle mechanics should be considered next.

Still not there yet like chrono trigger but i closely reminded the 1st time i play it.

Thank you , awesome teams.

Incredible Looking Nostalgia RPG

Sea of Stars is a throwback to SNES era JRPGs. It's seeking to capture the magic of Chrono Trigger, and largely it succeeds.

Sea of Stars looks and sounds incredible. There is amazing attention to detail in the world, the maps, and the aesthetic. Overall, just great.

The characters in Sea of Stars are fantastic, with distinct personalities, roles, and a little development over the course of the game.

The story is passable. I think this is one of the slight stumbles of the game. The story itself is relatively basic, following a predictable structure, and involving a lot of quests that don't always connect. There are moments it rises to greatness, particularly in the ways it depicts some of the more emotional moments, with dialogue-free cut scenes.

However, overall, I think the story is merely good, while most of the rest of the game is great.

I love the use of turn-based gameplay. I personally don't like the active button clicking in combat. I am both bad at it, and I think it interferes with the ways I like to play turn-based games. But, the systems in place work well and provide interesting challenges and choices to the player. …

Overall, the gameplay was great. I do think at times the skills and progression of your team can feel a bit off, with long gaps of little change, and then suddenly a new character joins and the whole rotation adapts. For some people this might be a bonus, but for me it did mean a few periods of the game started to feel repetitive.

A final note, I think the length of the game is perfect. You get a meaningful, and enjoyable story, in under 30 hours. If you want to experience the whole story, you get some solid rewards in game, and probably some story changes (I don't know I didn't do this). I loved that this game respected my time, no dungeon over stayed its welcome, the combats were less frequent, but tougher making my play sessions flow nicely.

Overall, if you are a RPG fan you owe it to yourself to try this Indie Gem. It lives up to the hype.

This game was leaving gamepass at the end of August 2025, and I learned this on August 18th, and from the 18th to the 30th, I was pretty religiously playing this game. I had a really fun time. I didn't really know what I was getting myself into, but the combat was fun with just the right amount of depth. Timing attacks was pretty fun, if a little too strict. The world was very beautiful and I liked the characters and the worldbuilding. The biggest drawback is the story, it is laughably bad. Two of the main villains have 0 reason for being evil and the overlooking evil baddies for a lot of the game have 0 depth to them. There is an interesting story that is going on in the background, but even that falls apart during the true ending of the game. Speaking of the ending, the regular ending is once again a laughably bad story part, but after getting everything needed for the true ending (which was fun to do, it was mostly sidequests for the main characters that had fun boss fights, the only annoying parts was collecting the collectibles to unlock the true ending but …

Overall, almost the whole time I was playing the game, I was really enjoying myself and enjoying how fun the combat was and marveling at how nice everything was to look at.

The one thing in the looks department that was weird was like the hand drawn cut scenes that happen throughout the game. They aren't bad, but they are such a whiplash from the pixel style of the actual game, that I really don't think they should have been included.

To talk about the DLC, I was left dissapointed by it. Once again, the story is incredibly lackluster. The problem with the DLC compared to the base game is that the level design is so boring, it's all basically go to a room, do a puzzle, fight an enemy. In the base game, there was more exploration offered. Also, the special cut scene of the DLC is laughable for how hard it is to achieve it, I'm happy I didn't bother going through the steps. The actual combat itself was still as fun as the base game, but I thought during the final boss it was kind of dumb how they revert back to their original powers instead of keeping the DLC powers.

Overall, I would rate the base game like a strong 8/10 because of how fun it was to constantly play and how nice it was to look at everything, but the story was just worse than non existent. I would give the DLC a 7, it's free DLC which is awesome, but it has the same story problems as the base game, and the levels were not as fun. Overall though, a great great game and am looking forward to what this studio makes next.

Woo boy, is there anything that can kill my interest in an rpg faster than terrible, forced jokes coupled with 4th wall breaks as part of the main story?

I’m not sure but I think I need a moment to forget what I just read. Sabotage Studio is great at nailing game mechanics but they really, really need a new writer.

I just started this game last night and I am SERIOUSLY impressed! The pixel graphics are gorgeous, the music is PHENOMENAL, and the combat is really engaging. Two hours in, it seems like the kind of game that has the perfect balance of a simple game that I can play to wind down after a long day, but just challenging enough to keep it interesting.

Idk who recommended this one to me but you're the real MVP today!

I backed this game, but never got very far when it finally released over a year ago. I'll get back to it eventually, especially since these updates look great. I'll probably wait for the DLC next year.

The entire game is now playable as 3-player couch co-op, the prologue has been revamped, there are new relics, speedrunner modes, updated difficulties, and more.

A love letter to classic RPGs that gives you the feels while offering ways to play it YOUR way ("walk in the park" all the way down to "I need my mommy"). Every character is memorable, I laughed out loud many times, and cried at least twice. This is one I will play again and again for years to come.

There was a Relic I received towards the end of the game called the "Artful Gambit" relic that is necessary for a trophy and WOW - it made the last few bosses wildly fun and tense, highly recommend turning it on for boss fights when you get it!

Play Sea of Stars, if you haven't yet! Check out my playthrough here!

This is an interesting one to review because every aspect of the game was really great with one or two frustrating flaws.

I thought the combat system was very good, the locks system is brilliant and introduces a layer of surprisingly deep puzzle solving to every encounter, and I kept discovering new techniques even into the final boss (e.g. I had an epiphany when I figured out how to optimize healing by benching hurt party members, wait for a healers turn, then switch all hurt members in at once). The most challenging fights require careful decisions around which party members should be active vs benched, when to use regular attacks to build up a reserve of magic, when to consume magic, when to use combos to build ultimate meter (ultimate attacks being the most valuable magic-source for locks), that add up to a level of strategy that traditional JRPG battle systems can't match. However, the super-mario RPG action mechanics for a few of the attacks became a huge PITA especially as the game wore on, Lunarang I am looking at you.

However, the super-mario RPG action mechanics for a few of the attacks became a huge PITA especially as the game wore on, Lunarang I am looking at you.

The soundtrack was musically pretty good, but it sounded really bad. Authenticity to 16bit audio felt a little unnecessary here and wasn't handled super well, as most tunes just sound painfully thin.

The items system is a stroke of genius. I hate items in RPGs. If its possible to get through the game without ever using or crafting items, I will. Sea of Stars reinvents the idea by eliminating most items altogether. Instead, you cook meals at campfires and can use them to heal in battle, the catch is you can only hold 10 meals at a time, requiring you to be careful about when to use them until you find the next campfire. Each of those 10 meals feels meaningful and has a strategic purpose, and its a brilliant way to fold healing items into the gameplay loop while eliminating the rote inventory management and hoarding mentality that typically comes with items in RPGs.

Exploration was wonderful, a lot like Golden Sun but with an element of verticality that was impressive for a 2D topdown game. However, you don't really unlock a good fast travel system until the very end of the game, and it was such a pain to get anywhere! If I had known the fast travel system existed, I would have waited to complete side quests until the end of the game and saved HOURS of backtracking.

For me, the biggest flaw with this game is the writing. It's not great and it too often gets in the way of the gameplay. There are too many lengthy cutscenes, a strange obsession with the character Garl, and truly boring main characters. It has its moments but they are too few and far between. For a game that proclaims to recapture the nostalgia of the great 16-bit RPGs, they really drop the ball on one of the key elements (for me anyway) - being an edgy badass. These characters would sooner sob into their self-prepared parfaits than show a bit of confidence or style.

Another game I decided to drop.

Got pretty far, actually. But halfway through Serai's world and I just couldn't take it anymore. SoS seemed right up my alley but turned into a major disappointment.

It looks GORGEOUS and most boss fights are pretty cool, but I liked nothing else. The combat gets boring, it can be unbalanced at times, music sucks, story is awful, characters have no charisma (Garl is the worst) and I absolutely HATED how every dungeon is heavily focused on traversal puzzles. Exploring in this game is a chore.

I got no joy out of Sea of Stars, unfortunately. A lot of people are comparing this to Chained Echoes, but I totally disagree. If you want a cool retro JRPG experience, I highly recommend CE over SoS.

I just found The Crypt, where all the game's backers have been immortalised with individual stones, with the bigger backers having custom made status and inscriptions on them. Some of these have amazing quotes and short tributes to loved ones, some in memoriam. There's thousands. It's really quite touching. Possibly the best way I've seen to thank your backers, outside of delivering a great game.

Overall it started off stronger than it ended.

Pros: the music, pixel art, gameplay, fighting, GARL!

Cons: the fights got stale, the game overstayed its welcome, but the biggest con was over underutilized the world building was as well as the characters. The plot was all over the place and there wasnt a lot of payoff for things that were set up, ESPECIALLY the ending. So many unanswered questions. To get the true ending you must 100% complete, no thanks. I watched a video instead.

I'm disappointed I didn't like this more. It felt like a true homage to 16-bit JRPGs and probably better then most that came out in that era. The pixel art is top notch and music is well orchestrated.

In a way, I feel like I've sadly aged out of this genre. The characters and dialog feel like it was meant for kids. The gameplay is very linear, the combat slow and not particularly challenging, and the scrolling dialog scenes left me impatient. None of that is very unusual for the genre. I'm sure I would have loved this game as kid and I can understand why others give it positive review now. It's just not the type of game I want to sink many hours into at this point of my life though.

Just finished up Act 1 of this game and here are some random thoughts:

  • The art, character design, environment design are all really pleasing
  • Soundtrack is absolutely stuffed with amazing tunes (the boss theme is ingrained in my brain)
  • I like the RPG mechanics, locks are a cool system, and the Paper Mario style mini games for attacking and defending is a nice touch
  • I was not sold on the story in the beginning, but after finishing Act 1, I am more on board
  • The names of characters and dialog are extremely hit or miss, there are times where I groaned from reading something

Great game so far excited to keep going.

Played about an hour and a half over the past two days. Enjoying it, a bit of classic JRPG with the kinda slow character/story development at the start but honestly it’s opened up way quicker than I expected.

I beat the first boss(Slug thing) and made it I guess to a semi open world area? Went fishing which was a fun little mechanic.

I’ve enjoyed the aspect of jumping into the water and the climbing ect it feels a tad bit more modern in that sense.

The combat also has a dodge and a double damage aspect with good button timing.

So far I’m enjoying it.
