bluepoint colpisce ancora

Voto 9.2/10

Incredibly Faithful Remake
This review is for the PlayStation 4 version

4.5/5

This is the PS4 remake from Bluepoint Games of the classic PS2 title. The original is one of my all time favorite games so I was hesitant to try this out for quite a few years. Thankfully Bluepoint took extreme care to honor the original and faithfully remake it. Playing this 7 years after launch it still looks incredible, with all the graphics and animations looking like what I imagined they looked like in my head way back when playing the original. This isn't just an HD update like the ps3 collection was when it included ICO. This is a build code and assets from the ground up remake. I'm happy this exists as it makes the game easier to play on modern hardware and introduces this masterpiece to a lot more people who may have missed it on original release.

Bluepoint included an updated control scheme to try to modernize the game a bit, but unfortunately I had played the original too many times that I could not get used to the new control scheme. Thankfully, you can use the original controls as well. Even with the modern controls, the physics will surely frustrate gamers new to this. …

Bluepoint included an updated control scheme to try to modernize the game a bit, but unfortunately I had played the original too many times that I could not get used to the new control scheme. Thankfully, you can use the original controls as well. Even with the modern controls, the physics will surely frustrate gamers new to this. Even the very first Colossi, you have to get to it's arena by climbing vines from the ground. I knew exactly where to go to get up, but the game still seems to decide when it wants to let you climb up that spot. The graphics and physics though can also lead to funny moments when you get absolutely launched comically through the air, or for speedrunners to find the exact ways to cheat the system and use these controls and physics to their advantage.

The soundtrack has been modified from the original release, but mostly with small changes. A few songs sound a bit more grandiose with extra layers seemingly added, but there are a few tracks that have been altered and I think sound worse because of it. The original soundtrack still holds up incredibly well today, so I think I would have preferred maybe just a slight remix with different levels to have it sound better on modern speakers. It still sounds great though even in this iteration.

This review is mostly comparing the remake to the original, but looking at this as a review of the game itself you absolutely cannot go wrong with picking this game up. It's still an absolute masterpiece of a game and one of the best examples of games as an art. The story is vague and ambiguous, with a world that yearns to be explored!

Really a masterpiece ?
This review is for the PlayStation 4 version

Played on a ps5 via ps plus

This game is regarded as a masterpiece, a metacritic mustplay with a 91 score and the 4th best game on ps4 for 2018 (metacritic)

I really can't see it...

Story : 3/10 It fits on a post it note and the characters are bland and lack any depth.

We don't play it for the story

World : 5/10 Big and beautiful but ultimately empty.

The game is so empty that when i saw a fish in a pond, i was more impressed than seeing a colossus.

Gameplay 6/10 The entire game is based around solving a puzzle 16 times.

The puzzle consists of finding a colossus by following a ray of light, fighting the colosssus by finding a way to climb it then stick it with your sword while trying to not fall down X 16t times.

Yes, fighting the colossi is fun and interesting the first few times especially the flying types but not 16 times and your abilities don't evolve at all, you just get more health and stamina and that's all. The things you can do at the start are the same you can do at the end.

Besides the awe of climbing a colossus, there's absolutely nothing to write home about

Conclusion : This game is supposed to make you interact on an emotional level with the main hero and it failed to make me interact with it. The story is basically inexistent, the characters say a few words the entire game so there's no development of the characters. The world is a beautiful but empty place and the colossi are beautiful and interesting to fight but after a while it becomes a chore.

PS. This is an old remastered game so i didn't bother to talk about controls, they are clunky and you need some time to get used to them, controlling your horse is really difficult if you're not in a wide open place.

I would have been dissapointed if i had bought this game as it seems more to me as a techno demo than a complete video game.

Conclusion : Play it if you have nothing better to do and if you get it on a discount, if you don't - you won't miss out on anything.

One of my all-time favorites. Can't tell you how many times I've completed the game, both the OG and the remake. Gorgeous visuals, a simple yet complete story, and by far one of the games I keep returning to years later.

I'm surprised at how much I like this game. It is dated, definitely, and some things are infuriating, but it is an incredible game.

I started playing this game again -and I rarely replay games so that's how much I liked SotC when I first played it- and wow, it feels like BotW. Now, BotW for me feels like the child between this game and the Xenoblade saga.

I recently decided that now that I had a PS4 I should pick up the remaster of Shadow of the Colossus, a game I enjoyed first probably nearly a decade ago after I finally got my hands on a PS2. After playing on and off for months, I finally finished it last night. I had some thoughts as I was playing that I sort of just wanted to get out there. Not quite a review, more just sort of thinking about the game, how its aged, and the existence of the remastered version. I don't want to delve super deep into anything, so I figure some long bullet points'll do.

  • What first struck me upon returning to the Forbidden Land was how fantastic it all looked. The team behind the game really put in the work to make a game that I had felt aged fairly well visually into a thing of beauty while fully capturing the style of the original. So props to them for that.
  • The above said, it is a very faithful remaster. And that means little to no additions were made on the gameplay side of things. And I think that's where the game really shows …

And I think that's where the game really shows its age. For those unfamiliar, the game takes a sort of open world style approach to things while still forcing you to fight the colossi in order. What became immediately evident to me as I played was just how barren the world of Shadow of the Colossus really is. Your goal is to slay the colossi, and there is very little else to do here. Now, over 15 years after its release, it's jarring to have an open world that so large yet so entirely void of anything interesting to do. Despite the world itself being intriguing and beautiful, tempting me to explore, I just couldn't bring myself to do it, because I knew that there was absolutely nothing to be gained from it. No interesting collectibles, no lore bits, nada. There are some lizards you can kill, some fruit you can eat, and I guess little shiny things that don't seem to do all that much and that's it. Yet the game's setting begs for some deep interesting backstory. Even the addition of little tidbits of lore here and there, maybe slabs of stone with engravings to find, would have me scouring the land in search of them, but there's really nothing. It's a shame. Some might see it as a virtue for the game to be so laser-focused on its goal, but to me it felt just a little starved.
  • Continuing on the thought of the game feeling outdated, I've gotta point out the way Wander and more specifically Agro, his horse, control. On top of the world offering little incentive to explore, the controls you use to navigate it make doing so an absolute chore. Riding Agro is a massive pain because he takes an eternity to get up to max speed and another to wind down to a halt. Not to speak of * shudder * turning him. Any attempt to slightly adjust his position either did nearly nothing or completely changed the direction he was facing, and when the auto camera (which it seemed I couldn't turn off?) swings as wildy as it does in this game, it makes it impossible to get a good look at much of the gorgeous scenery the game has to offer. Disappointing. Instead of exploring I found myself wanting to get from the Shrine of Worship to each colossus as quickly as I could. And Wander himself isn't much better. It's in part due to personal error, but in the final fight I fell something like 6-7 times simply due to the clunkiness of the climbing and jumping-off controls. You can make the comparison to the original Silent Hill games which likely were clunky on purpose for atmosphere and tension in combat, but when it directly gets in the way of enjoyment is where I draw the line.
  • All that said, despite everything I think the game still stands strong as one of the best examples of games as art. The story while not overly complex is tragic and holds powerful themes of hope and despair. In a way the minimalism of the game serves to accentuate this, though I don't find that the sacrifice is worth the cost of my desire to explore. I think most players will find themselves stopping at some point, if not even at the first colossus, and wondering Am I doing the right thing? Do these beautiful creatures deserve the fate I am forcing upon them? It's a game that provokes powerful emotions with little text or spoken dialogue.

I think because of how strong the games themes and world are, it absolutely warranted a remaster, if only to bring its story to a new generation with a beautiful fresh coat of paint. I don't think it's aged well at all when it comes to gameplay, but I suppose I'm more happy with little change to the game than I would be if they added a massive amount of unnecessary junk.
