I don't wanna work, I just wanna be an insect carrying whole worlds on their shoulders

Perfectly designed puzzles that made me feel very intelligent even when they weren actually hard, a mind-bending 'worlds within worlds' mechanic and an amazing alien world atmosphere. What's not to love?

You can read my full review in spanish on GamerFocus. Its another one for the surprsingly long list of "best games of 2023".

Maybe puzzle game veterans would want harder challenges and the narrative wasn't intriguing (Limbo and Inside also had ambiguous plots, but those were more interesting to me). The Switch port isn't great either, but I didn't care.

Cocoon is the Perfect Game for Game Pass Subscribers

I had mixed feelings about Cocoon. On the one hand, I appreciated its unique style, which intrigued me and made me curious about the backstory. I also enjoyed the puzzles and the way they were introduced and explained. On the other hand, I disliked the gameplay that required dexterity and timing. I found it frustrating to die repeatedly in the boss fights, even though the only penalty was time. This was especially true for the first few bosses. Some of the later ones were more interesting, such as the one with the teleportation mechanic. I liked that one. But the ones that made me fail over and over again were not fun. I also thought this game was rather short. Overall, I think this was a good game to play on Game Pass, and is the sort of thing I subscribed for. It was a decent little distraction that I mostly liked, that I might not have played otherwise.

Short and sweet, a really good and innovative puzzle game expertly crafted. Not much else to say.

Visually stunning game with a killer soundtrack. Controls are smooth and responsive and the puzzles are intuitive and creative (even though I found most of them way too easy).

I didn't understand what the story was exactly about up until the very end when everything's explained. I wish we got more glimpses and details of the game's world and dynamics throught our journey though. I'd love to learn more about it!

Maybe we'll get a sequel in the future?

This is a really well crafted environmental puzzle game. The mechanics are simple which allows for you to be able to really focus on the areas around you to figure out what you need to do to progress through each section. The art style is gorgeous and each orb world is so distinct and interesting. I liked that the boss fights focused more on recognizing patterns and evading their attacks versus button mashing to beat them. Each of the four orbs came with a new type of interaction you could have with the environment and I loved seeing how they carried throughout the game and how they could be used in unique and clever ways to solve the obstacles you face. Overall I enjoyed my time with this game!

Fun puzzles, my brain is fried!

Another gem I got to enjoy thanks for PC Game Pass! Starting off relatively simple, you move orbs through puzzles that get progressively more challenging. By the end of the game, orbs are stacked within each other through complicated staging and meets that challenge and reward tension that is very hard to pull off.

The art style was an absolute joy throughout the entire game. I never knew what exactly was going to happen next visually, and the individual biomes were all very unique in their style. The boss "battles" were a fun challenge as an alternative to the puzzle solving.

This leads to my main complaint- too many puzzles! The puzzles were brilliant and I think the number of them was perfect for the game, but their needed to be more variety in gameplay besides the puzzles. The boss battles were a fun alternative, so I'm not sure if more of those battles, or even some other mechanic, would have made the game even better.

Overall, it's an artistically beautiful and fun game that pushed my brain to think in different ways. The final cutscene was also very beautiful!

COCOON - October 23

Roll Credits?: Yes!

Surprised/Let Down/As Expected: As Expected

Favorite Mechanic or Narrative Moment: The puzzles in the last hour or so of the game were amazing. Seeing how the mechanics played out to solve each one was so satisfying, and it felt like you were really exploring every facet of how world-hopping could be used by the end of it all. They were fun to mentally work out and to execute.

Also, have to shout out the art style and presentation as a whole - plenty of moments I found myself just looking around at the world and taking it in. Jeppe Carlsen knows how to make a visually striking game, and I hope he keeps refining this style.

Least Favorite Thing: As with Limbo and Inside, a lot of puzzles felt like the solutions were immediately apparent, but just required you to then do the legwork and wait for it to be resolved. This seems to come a bit from the puzzle design as a whole since there are often very few choices to even make.

The best puzzles were ones with plenty of places to set orbs down (red herrings in a way) which …

The best puzzles were ones with plenty of places to set orbs down (red herrings in a way) which required you to actually work through it. A decent number of puzzles felt like I would enter the area and just start placing things down on the 1 or 2 pedestals available and the puzzle would basically solve itself without needing to understand the mechanisms being activated.

This combined with the length (took about 3.5 hours to complete) meant that more of the game was style for me than the hour or so of substance at the end. Luckily, that style carries pretty hard!

Moth Man Marvin (Has a Fear of Flying): 'i know lets be a moth... but the thing is, the moth can't fly. The Moth moves like a moth all over the place, but has to walk!'

Bug House Jack (Certified Trainer): that sounds cool. mmm i love bugs too, man, :licks lips: why don't we like, trap more bugs in bug houses... made of marbles! We could like collect them like.. gotta catch them all?'

That's the game. I mean, it's pretty good. I enjoyed it. But just what the heck were the devs smoking??? The puzzles were pretty good. A lot of interesting ideas. Most weren't too difficult. The game had great design, a cool creative look that was utterly alien, and some rather well thought out design ideas executed well (the drone will flash and point towards where you need to do, when you finish some areas, some things will shut themselves off so you can't go back too far) One of the handful of puzzle oriented games with 'think outside the box solutions.'

I also seem to be one of the few folks that thought the boss fights were GREAT.

I get why they call it cocoon because you start out in one, but... it's a minor part of the game, really. I had AI come up with some better names that describe the game better:

Mothballs
The Lost Marbles of the Marvelous Mr. Moth
I have No Wings and I Must Haul
Marble Mothness: A Wingless Odyssey
HeMoth Masters Of The Universe
Oh My God it's Full of Marbles
Marble Souls (Prepare To Fly Edition)
The Legend of Mothra: A Wing Between Worlds
The Many-Bugs Interpretation of Marble Mechanics

Anyway, it's a great game, go play it. Sometimes it's a bit frustrating and not fun the whole time but it's not that bad and pretty satisfying to figure things out.

Quizás el juego con los puzzles mas locos que he jugado, algunos de cerebro galaxia. La premisa es dificil de explicar, es un poco la avispa de antman en el mundo cuántico resolviendo puzzles con los mundos en miniatura de Rick y Morty. Y funciona.

V1CGaming's review of Cocoon

Cocoon is a confidently crafted and impressively detailed puzzle game. It isn't afraid to let you explore and figure things out, rewarding your efforts with unparalleled satisfaction. The fantastic visual design and beautiful soundtrack complement the experience. While you might not be left gaping at plot twists during the credits, you'll undoubtedly sit back with a profoundly content feeling, knowing you've cleverly solved it all. That's precisely what I expect from a puzzle-centric game.

From the first level warp, Cocoons presence is dignified and delicate in presentation.

A liminal adjacent world, evolved eons past its golden age. Only to now whisper mystery and greater knowledge for those who know how to look for it.

The less said, the more time to let its presence be, as if to not scare away a butterfly.

An axiom I greatly need in my approach to daily life.

Very pretty game. Especially enjoyed a lot of the animation work.

Meticulous level design removes any of the challenge. If looking for a hard puzzle game this ain't it.

Runs poorly on the switch too. Lots of frame drops.

On the subway I was thinking about the difference between Coocoon's puzzles, which I though were kind of meh, and The Talos Principle's, which I love.

One of the key aspects, I think, is that Cocoon puzzles are "digital", or "discrete". You can do just one thing in one place without any wiggle-room. For example, you can rest your balls only on the designated spaces.

In The Talos Principle puzzles are more "analogical". You can set boxes, crystals and other puzzle elements anywhere. And while all solutions are probably topologically equivalent, this gives the puzzles a greater sense of freedom and complexity because the relatively constrained list of interactions is not so obvious.

Been playing tonight to try not to think about the newly elected president.

It's fine, but I think it might be overhyped. The mix of puzzles and bad bossfights doesn't work all that well and the puzzles themselves are relatively simple. The art is gorgeous, though, and disgusting at times.

This is a pretty solid little game. Loving the dichotomy of puzzles and boss fights, it satisfies too very different itches and is great. But for those who aren’t big on boss rush games the bosses really are just fun little action based puzzles.

This game is pretty good, some cool animations and puzzles in here, nice mostly intuitive design and overall flow of each section. I think some stuff like selecting symbols in the right order is kind of a miss, and agree with others that some of the timing-based stuff isn't really the best, but it generally ranges from decent to good. I don't love it but I found it pretty cool.

I love the puzzles and think the didactic design is excellent, but I really don’t like the Boss sequences. I’m not here for dexterity gameplay, even if they are “easy” and the punishment for failure is low. I fail at them enough that it becomes extremely irritating for me to encounter a Boss.

Outstanding game. The puzzles are clever and about the difficulty I find enjoyable. The look is really cool and organic in a way. I think the part that most stood out to me is how polished the controls felt. It just feels very fluid and snappy. Not super important in a puzzle game, but I think it shows dedication. Very much recommended.

Idk why but it's reading very weird to me how many of the "puzzles" in this game are actually just "get good at timing". I feel like most puzzle games I've played actively teach you that if you're trying to time something just right, you're probably going about it the wrong way overall. Enamored by the sound + music though, the way it affirms progression is pretty cool.
