A man can dream...

8/10

An extremely solid and wonderfully cheerful game. Taking place on an Island that Link awakens on you must go through 8 dungeons and defeat the nightmares within to wake the Wind Fish. Filled with typical Zelda charm and puzzling just refined to a delightful degree. A remake of the classic Gameboy game, this Switch version looks gorgeous and toyetic and a full orchestral score makes it a delight to look at as well as hear (and boy of course we get to hear the classic theme). The dungeons and challenges are just challenging enough but not ever too hard or unfair. This felt like a breath of fresh air - a perfect game to unwind too, and irrepressibly fun; classic Nintendo.

More Remakes/Remasters Please!
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

This was a perfect little transition out of Breath of the Wild world. Honestly, my biggest issue with Link's Awakening for the switch is that they don't have any more old Zelda games for me to play outside of the NES & SNES stuff! Prior to BOTW I had only played The Phantom Hourglass, and now I want to play them all. Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, that's easy money right there. While gamers gripe at having to rebuy the same game twice (or thrice), it's usually worth the cost of admission for a remastered game on your current console.

Link's Awakening is an elegant little game and the updated visuals are outstanding. There's almost a claymation quality to the visuals that always made this world a treat to visit. My only quibble with the game proper is that there were a couple of dungeons that were absolutely punishing to the point where it wasn't fun anymore. Actually, I think it was just the penultimate Eagle's Nest dungeon that caused me to put the game away for a week before sucking it up and grinding through the dungeon. Other than that, it's a wonderful game with a surprisingly weighty story. My 6 year old (and gaming co-captain) had a big ol' existential quandary at the end and is still asking questions about the game's conclusion. And while that leads to a lot of grasping at straws in regard to explaining something that's hard to explain, I appreciate an elegant story to go with elegant gameplay. Here's hoping Nintendo realizes the dragon's horde of gold they are sitting on and we get some more Zelda remakes!!

One of the less standard Zelda games... Is there a standard Zelda game?
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

I was sold on this the minute I saw how amazingly cute it is. It really is. So. Cute. The update makes everything 3D but does not err to the 'ultra realistic' in any way. The cuteness never stops. Until it does! (where have I said that before)... Once it stops, things gets really really dark. I haven't done the "secret" ending and I'm waiting to view that until a friend succeeds at it.
This isn't a super difficult game but there were points where I got utterly stopped and had to find help. The final dungeon is probably the worst one in the Zelda universe and I don't mean that as praise. The 2nd to last one is pretty fun, though, once you pick it apart. Unlike many Zelda games you don't have to get all of the items to complete it. I'm missing a boomerang and i suppose some sort of hammer but I am obviously not a completionist so I'm going to let it lie.
My Switch tells me I spent less than 20 hours playing this game. This was just the time burning ego boost I needed to be able to get back into Final Fantasy …

omnomnivore's review of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

I picked up this game after BOTW. So this is my 2nd Zelda title.

Hmm how should I say it. BOTW made me feel sparks of happiness and confidence whenever I managed to solve a puzzle dungeon in my own way or finally reached those plant flying thingies for korok seeds. However, this game made me feel the opposite.

The gameplay is limiting and I find myself saying like why cant i go this way or why cant i just do this. I spent quite a while to figure things out cause i didn't want to give up. But in the end, i did. 😆 I felt so dumb whenever i looked up solutions on the net or gave my switch to my boyfriend and he figured it out in a short amount of time. Him and people on the internet say it was just easy. Huhu.

Later i found out this is a remake of an old game which explains why it was made that way.

As for the story, it is somewhat short and lacking for me. The graphics are pleasing to my eyes despite me not being much of a fan for chibi games. But overall, this …

Link and Marin sit on some beachfront driftwood watching seagulls fly toward the horizon

I tried playing Link's Awakening DX a couple of years ago. While I liked the game's dungeons quite a bit, I wasn't as charmed by what I felt was an awkward and punishing overworld.

I had a much better time playing this remake. While it doesn't magically resolve all my issues with the game, the easier eight-way movement and more detailed map were the edge I needed to navigate Koholint with confidence. The adorable Rankin/Bass-esque visual style lends each area far more charm and distinctiveness than before, at least for someone like me who isn't terribly nostalgic for the Game Boy aesthetic. And the dungeons remain some of my favorites of the series (well, except for Eagle's Tower... I eventually resorted to a walkthrough for that one).

While I'd be even happier with a remake in this style of Oracle of Seasons/Ages, I'm glad I had a chance to finally see this adventure through to its end.

A Link to 1993

I played the original Gameboy version several times as a kid so this was an interesting remake for me. Compared to other 2D Zelda games it feels pretty short and confined, like an introduction to the series rather than an entry that stands alongside the greats. When you remember that it was a Gameboy game though, the game feels huge and lengthy. Looking back as an adult it is retroactively amazing that they managed to cram so much content and such a large map onto a 512 KB cartridge that played on a 160x144 pixel display. I was really impressed by the art style of remake where characters and environments often evoke stop-motion clay. It’s still a fun and pretty unique Zelda-game, story-wise, but it’s a little shallow if you compare it directly to all of the other amazing 2D Zelda games that have come out in the 25 years since it was originally released.

A Faithful Revival with Technical Friction
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

The remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening felt inevitable. I played the original The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening when it first released, and at the time it was extraordinary—especially for a Game Boy title. Its atmosphere, structure, and music made it one of Nintendo’s most memorable handheld entries.

The Switch version takes a clear 3D reinterpretation approach, which makes sense visually, but fundamentally the game remains the same. The quests, structure, and music are largely intact. This raises the familiar question of remake versus remaster. While the visuals were rebuilt, the core experience is unchanged. It is essentially a faithful modernization rather than a reimagining.

Where it falters is performance. The inconsistent frame rate is difficult to reconcile with Nintendo’s usual standards. It feels sluggish at times, which is surprising given the relatively modest visual complexity. Technical instability detracts from what should have been a smooth, polished re-release. That issue became even more pronounced in later titles that built on similar technical foundations.

As a way to experience the game without revisiting original hardware, it is certainly convenient. For newcomers, it remains a strong Zelda entry at its core. However, the technical shortcomings make the release feel …

Decent Zelda game

I guess this is the most modern classical style Zelda game we have, and for that I appreciate it. The high fidelity but toy-like graphics are pleasing to the eye, the exploration and dungeons are fun. But there’s a number of things that make it kinda… meh to me.

Number one - I wish it would just embrace the ideas of modern Metroidvanias. Like Metroid dread - actually track 100% completion! Give us a map upgrade that will help spot missing secrets! I don’t know why Zelda games have always avoided this.

Second, combat. It’s way way way way way too easy. Bosses take like, 5-10 hits. It makes the game never really feel like an “epic” adventure, but more like a children’s toy.

The game starts out promising, but it just fizzles out for me about halfway through. Those 2 things were my biggest issues, but I also don’t think the dungeons are very fun. It’s got some good moments of exploration, visually and musically is great, but it lands at kind of a mid-tier Zelda for me. Pipistrello and the cursed yo-yo, master key, kharon’s crypt - I’ll take these any day over this.

Still a million times …

Link's Awakening (Switch)

Well Made but Didn't Capture My Interest
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

I am not sure what it is about Zelda games but I just never enjoy them and completing them always seems a chore. I have bought Breath of the Wild twice and sold it after playing for about 30 minutes each time. With everyone's love for the franchise I have to assume I am the odd one and it is not the games that are actually bad and/or boring. In this case, the simple and small map of Link's Awakening well fun for a while but after getting mostly through the story it lost my interest and I never finished.

The Legend of Zelda and The Red Lodge
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

This is one of the more fascinating Zelda titles. It was developed primarily during after hours by a small group of passionate nintendo employees and without Shigeru Miyamoto initial consent. Tezuka (the director of the game) had ideas for the Zelda series that were shot down by Miyamoto during the development of A Link to the Past. One of which included unequipping Link's sword and using a bow and bombs to fire explosive arrows like Rambo. It was heavily inspired by Twin Peaks (hence the title for the review) and they weren't restrained by the standard Zelda trappings since the game was being developed without anyone executives knowledge. They included numerous Easter eggs (pun intended) including side scrolling platforming, Goombas, Piranha plants, chain comp and even Kirby. They never asked permission to include these beloved characters.

The end result is a fever dream of a Zelda game with the best story (in my opinion) of any entry in the franchise. It's impressive how far they pushed the limited hardware of the gameboy. The end result is a fever dream of a Zelda game with the best story (in my opinion) of any entry in the franchise. It's impressive how far they pushed the limited hardware of the gameboy. It had it's baggage. Only having two buttons to map moves to resulted in tediously having to pause and re-equip items. This was compounded by the usefulness of the Roc's feather and how well the game implemented light platforming and jumping. Thus, you almost always wanted the Roc feather equipped leaving you with only one flex slot to use. The switch remake does much to alleviate this problem. Now the power bracers stay equipped the whole time, much like they did in Ocarina of Time, there's a keybinding for the Pegasus boots (a most welcomed addition), sword and shield. Thus you can equip two different items while still having access to all the previously mentioned moves which is a real godsend and significantly reduced the amount of inventory management. I do wish they took this a step further and gave a dedicated button for jumping (as it stands there are two redundant trigger buttons that could have been used). Still, it's changes like these that make a remake worth pursuing.

The dungeon designs may not be the most complicated of any Zelda entry, but they are the most non-linear and encourage exploration like the rest of the game design does. There will be optional rooms and chests that reward the players with rupees, which are useful this time around, and sometimes heart pieces or shells. While I appreciate how little this game holds your hand and trusts your intelligence, it expects you to make a few big leaps to solve puzzles both within and outside dungeons. Some of these puzzles can be tedious to solve, such as killing enemies in a specific order to make a key drop or using blocks, that you need to control, to fill all the holes in a room. The later really stumped me for a time. I had no idea I could change the direction of the moving blocks. There isn't any indication other than the block moving until it hits a floor and stops. I just assumed it moved along a set path. Once I figured out (I cheated and looked it up) I could manipulate the movement of the block, I was able to push forward and complete the dungeon. A few of the puzzles around this mechanic were satisfying to solve. Still, the game is rather unconventional with both its dungeons and puzzles. Be sure to pay mind to the dungeon map and looking for light lines between rooms, it's an indicator for a destructible wall (some of which are hard to spot in game).

I thought the pre-dungeon quests were mostly fair with the exception of the Bird key. You need to navigate a maze, get a song, go back to the main town, uncover a secret catacomb, use the song to revive a blue rooster, then use the rooster to fly across an impassable chasm... the only hint you are given is "Go to the mountains," and that's not true until after you get the blue rooster... still, overall the game does a great job of giving you a vague sense of where to explore next and trusts you to figure it out.

This game also featured the first trade quest sequence, which would be revisited in Ocarina of Time. It is required to complete this quest to beat the game, but I found it enjoyable and feasible to figure out. It's progression is well designed and coincides with the main story progression. The boomerang is more than worth it. That shit is OP AF.

What did the remake get right? The art direction, the revamped music (this is a touchy subject, I'm sure plenty of fans of the original would have preferred to have access to the original sound track and I think there's merit to that), the quality of life changes to items/controls and making a near 1-to-1 remake of the original world and dungeons.

As I mentioned earlier, I wish they took this a bit further by adding a dedicated jump button, but the changes are still all welcomed from my end. The game has performance issues. The frame rate in the over world was constantly tanking which is weird given how highly stylized the graphics were. It's a shame it's not better optimized. It is cool re exploring this game with a constantly scrolling over world which adds a nice dimension and teases things to come in the peripherals. I personally liked the decision to stick with stagnant camera in the dungeon like on the gameboy. They also added a plethora of new collectibles including twice as many heart pieces and shells. This may appeal to some, but not me. I personally don't like tedious collect-a-thons and didn't bother collecting them all. I tried to be thorough with exploration but I didn't stress over it. Some of the new hidden items are also just stupid. For one new shell you need to play a song on the ocarina to get it to spawn... there's no indication that you need to do this to solve a puzzle so it comes off as just obtuse and unfair. I didn't bother with the dungeon creator because of how half-baked it felt. It's a shame they didn't give you more freedom with it and allow you to download community made dungeons. That could have been a blast and given the game longevity. There are other changes, such as tuning bosses to make them more challenging, and most of these were good. I did think the Ganon form was a tad unfair. I had no idea I was suppose to use a spin or charge attack. There aren't any indications that these attacks would work...

In conclusion, a lot of heart went into this remake and it succeeds at what it wanted to accomplish. I wish they took a bit further, but it's still a great product that is worth checking out.

Our Epic Review of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening!
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

Lana: I liked playing this game a lot! The visuals are stunning, the gameplay is fun, there's lots of hidden items around (like the secret seashells) and the music is downright amazing! I do have a few irks with the game though however. First of all, in literally every new ''screen'' there are framerate drops. So badly that for the first 5 to 10 hours it really broke my immersion. Also, Nintendo claims this is a remake. However, what did they exactly add compared to the old game? That you have to kill enemies now by making them hit your shield first? Wow. So much for a remake. It felt more like a really good remaster honestly. I never played the original though (had to look up the differences between the original and this game), so that made it feel less like a remaster I guess because I didn't know about what was in the original initally. Finally, the mario references were kinda weird? But then again those were part of the old game as well, I guess that is just a matter of taste. Rodrigo: This was literally the same kind of experience I had with Link Between Worlds. And I say that in the best possible way. I don't usually like puzzle games but when it has to do with games like LoZ:LBW and Link's Awakening I really can't complain. It was a really enjoyable game with one of the most engaging stories in any Zelda game (I've played) possibly. The ending specially made me break inside. The graphics were really cute and exactly what they should've been. The music also really fun! Mabe Village and Animal Village being two of my faves! If there's anything I dislike about this game - i's the stupid frame drops. It's ridiculous at points. It destroys the immersion of the game completely. Apart from that, I don't know much about the original but from we looked up there's not that many differences. So I guess it was just a faithful remaster. Which is fine but if there's anything I'd like them to remove from the game is the super mario references. Anyhow I really had fun, Not that many complaints and makes me curious about playing the original. 8/10

I prefer the old version of this game. This version is very beautifull and I'm glad for the music's orchestrated, but for dungeons is better the old perspective. In the eagle's tower dungeon I was so lost for this reason bc i didn't know where to jump. Sometimes we need the old perspectives to continue.

That's twice now I get stuck for quite a long time because the combination of art style and camera perspective kept me from noticing there was a way where it seemed there was none. Cute as it looks, I am not a fan of this at all so far.

Echoes of Wisdom so bad it convinced me to begin a second play through of this game.

Been freshening myself up on Grezzo's last top-down Zelda by doing a three-heart run of the Link's Awakening remake in Hero Mode. Instantly I was reminded of the absolutely atrocious frame drops in this game. I can usually forgive less-than-perfect performance, but this game was and still is a disaster in that department. Not holding my breath, but I really hope Echoes of Wisdom fares better there.

I love the artstyle in this game. Reminds me of an old pokemon game. The gameplay is lots of fun and its still challenging at parts. Exploring the island biome is a nice change of pace from Hyrule. The items were all very unique and the dungeons were fun.

Having fun revisiting a childhood classic in remake form. Wish the frame rate would stay consistent though, there are a lot of slowdowns, especially when transitioning areas

I don't know if I wasn't paying attention in 2019 or I just forgot but this is a PHENOMENAL remake. Firing on all cylinders. I really hope this is inspiring Nintendo to work on more 2D Zeldas behind the scenes.

Nintendo really liked their stories about the protagonists causing destruction during the Game Boy era, huh?

Really nice-made remake! But i don´t get it why this game has so many slowdowns. i can't understand how it successfully got through nintendo quality control with the lags. The music is really good and the character models well made. When i have to choose between the GB version and the remake, i would choose the GB version. Nevertheless you should play this game.

Honestly, I can see why people are nostalgic for it, and it is still very good for what it is (a remake of a 30 year old game). But if you missed it, you really don't have to play it, ESPECIALLY if you played link to the past and were content with that experience or if somehow you weren't a fan of it.

I enjoyed it, and the make-your-own-dungeon thing is a neat concept, but I kind of bounced off of it, and since a lot of the top rewards in the game are for that, there were some things that weren't very gratifying.

The story is a big question mark too.

I love zelda and other than the last 2 tiers of the dungeon maker, I 100%'d this, so it was still a good time.

I remember picking this up and the last Link's Awakening Amiibo at my local gamestop. The good old days of being able to walk into your local video games store without the risk of contracting a deadly virus. How I miss those days. Anyways, I started this video game immediately after returning home and was instantly hit with nostalgia. The opening sequence sent chills down my spine! I sat through and finished this game in a few days with some help from guides (I couldn't remember all the solutions for all the puzzles, call it old timer's brain). It was a great remake with a very cute art style. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys Zelda. It was great jumping into an old-school Zelda title after spending hundreds of hours in Breath of the Wild

I got used to this game’s unusual art style pretty quickly, but not to its constant frame drops. It’s a bit disheartening that a mainline Zelda game is in such a state to begin with, but especially that the game was not supported after release to fix it.

As OoT, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess were my childhood games, I’ve tried a whopping five 2D Zelda games before this and never really got super into them. No, not even that one. No, not that other one either. Despite a handful of complaints I have, this one seems better, or at least easier for me to get into. I got about halfway through I think so far. I’m not absolutely dying to play more of it or anything, but it’s mostly pretty fun. Will keep going 1-2 dungeons per day and see it through.
