This is a stealth-action masterpiece that blends espionage, survival, and emotional storytelling into one of the most iconic entries in the series. Set during the Cold War, it follows Naked Snake on a solo mission deep in Soviet territory. The game introduces camouflage mechanics, stamina management, and a survivalist edge, pushing players to adapt to the jungle environment. The story is gripping, with standout characters like The Boss and a powerful, emotionally charged finale. Hideo Kojima’s signature cinematic style shines, and the James Bond-style theme song adds flair. It's widely regarded as one of the greatest games of its generation.

The main theme song for this game will be forever in my memory, I consider it the best game theme of all time, very unique. I consider this game the best PlayStation 2 title, and one of the best games of all time, out of all the MGS titles, this was the one I replayed the most, is not just about the story but also about how fun it is compared to the other ones. The PlayStation 2 is also the only platform in which more than one MGS title was released, up until this point the team decided to wait for new technological advancements happened before introducing a new title, in order to use their creativity to the fullest to bring new and unique mechanics to the table.

This happened since the very fist MGS title, and this is no different, you need to press harder on the triggers of the controller in order to actually fire the weapon, not to mention the unique boss mechanics which, depending on your actions, could lead to completely different boss fights, or even routes for the main plot development, though never changing the main story, at least. This is one of the best games of all time and I recommend everybody to play this any way possible, it doesn't matter the platform, this will for sure be forever one of the best games of all time.

I ejoyed this one. The controls are undoubtedly clunky and the small connected are design isn't commonly used anymore - but it works here. Each area is a stealth puzzle with a plethora of options available.

The animation and cutscenes are so classy for a PS2 game - reminds me of my favourite FFXII.

The story is pretty goofy but that's expected from Metal Gear at this point. If I compare it to MGS5 it is far superior in that it makes some semblance of sence, whereas if I compare it to MGS I personally think that story is a bit more compelling.

Unfortunately the controls ended up grating on me and I stopped playing after the Grozyj Grad infilitration section. I think I'll pick up the remake and finish it off when that comes out.

I actually ended up revisiting this game just to finish it off. I played through the entire end stretch - from the torture sequence til the ending - in one night. I have to say I think I did myself a disservice as I sort of rushed it. The story is so goofy but again I can't help but give this game a pass for it. I do think I made a mistake playing on hard difficulty - this shit was way too challenging and exacerbated by the mechanical clunkiness, which lowered my enjoyment somewhat. Overall though a satisfying conclusion, with great gameplay and a goofy story.

I'd be keen to dip in again for the remake soon.

STEALTH-ACTION - Naked Snake infiltrates the Soviet Union's jungles to prevent a nuclear catastrophe. Serves as the origin story of Big Boss.

PROS:

++ Great improvement to gameplay. Finally, a camera that you can control! The modern camera along with the wide arsenal of tools and weapons at your disposal made this entry the best in the series so far in terms of stealth gameplay. Definitely one of the best stealth games I've played.

++ The characters. Although I don't think it reached the story highs of MGS2, I still loved the origin stories of Big Boss and Ocelot. It also introduced two incredible characters in The Boss and EVA.

++ Incredible boss fights. The four that stood out were The End (a cat & mouse hunt with a legendary sniper), The Boss (an emotional fight with your master), The Sorrow (creepy), and the scripted sequence with the Shagohod/Volgin (exhilirating).

++ Camo system. Made stealth more viable.

++ Great soundtrack. The music is as good as ever, especially the "Snake Eater" theme song.

++ Addition of CQC. Even though I personally found the CQC to be unintuitive, I still appreciated its addition because it opens up new ways to take down enemies.

CONS:

-- Clunky controls. First-person aiming and shooting still has a clunky control scheme.

-- New mechanics slowed down gameplay. They added a lot of new mechanics, but I felt that many of them were unnecessary and just slowed down the pace of gameplay (Eating food to regain stamina, having limited in-game inventory slots and needing to manage them in the backpack, and curing wounds and injuries).

-- Cobras were too goofy. I really liked the boss fights, but the Cobras had no backstory and were a little bit too goofy for my liking.

-- Annoying escort mission Hated the portion of the game when you had to escort EVA

-- Slow start. The first portion, Virtuous Mission, was an uninteresting way to start the game.

-- Forgettable CODEC calls. I didn't really enjoy talking to Major Zero, Sigint, or Para-Medic.

Metal gear solid 3 snake eater is a 2004 action, adventure and stealth game. The game is produced by Konami Computer Entertainment Japan and distributed by Konami, who have done a great job.The story of the game is as follows.Organizing a Virtuous Mission in 1964, CIA agent Naked Snake was sent to Tselinoyarsk, USSR.Aided by Major Zero, the Para-Medic, and his former mentor boss, Snake is tasked with rescuing Soviet scientist Sokolov, who is secretly developing a nuclear-equipped tank, the Shagohod.Snake finds and accompanies Sokolov, but encounters the Boss, who announces his defection to the USSR and provides two Davy Crockett nuclear projectiles to his new benefactor, Colonel Volgin.Sokolov is captured by the cobra Unit and thrown off a bridge by the snake boss. Volgin stole the Shagohod and detonated one of the nuclear projectiles to cover up the theft, which later incriminated the boss. The injured Snake was saved by fulton extraction.Operation Snake Eater The Soviet Union, which detected the US aircraft over Tselinoyarsk, declared the US responsible for the nuclear attack. US President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev plan to prove the innocence of the United States by stopping VOLGIN's faction, destroying the Shagohod and eliminating the boss. Snake is redeployed to Tselinoyarsk to fulfill these demands and is told to meet fellow agent EVA with NSA agent ADAM, who has defected to the Soviet Union to infiltrate Volgin's ranks; Snake is instead met and helped by EVA, who directs him to a lab where Sokolov is taken. The snake encounters the Ocelot and removes the sting. He reaches the laboratory and meets the Soviet scientist Granin, whose conceptualization of a two-legged tank was rejected in favor of the Shagohod. Depressed, Granin reveals that Sokolov and Shagohod are in Volgin's military Fortress Groznyj Grad. The snake removes fear, the end and anger. In Groznyj Grad, the Snake finds Sokolov, but he is caught. After killing Granin, a suspicious Volgin beats Sokolov to death and tortures the snake, which lost an eye while protecting a disguised EVA from the Ocelot, suspecting that she is a spy. The snake is imprisoned but escapes. Snake returns to Groznyj Grad to destroy the Shagohod, but is confronted by boss Volgin and Ocelot, who expose EVA as a spy. Volgin informs the Serpent of philosophers, a secret organization of the most powerful figures in the United States, the Soviet Union and China, who have formed an agreement to win the Second World War and create a new world order. The group has jointly raised $ 100 billion, the philosopher's legacy, to finance its research and operations. However, after the war, the organization began to struggle and disintegrate, and the legacy was divided and hidden in banks around the world.Volgin had inherited this money illegally, and Snake found out that the USA was trying to take him away. The snake defeats Volgin and destroys his hangar, but Volgin follows in the Shagohod. The snake disables the Shagohod, and Volgin is killed by a lightning bolt. Snake and EVA escape to the lake where WIG is hiding. Before escaping, the Snake confronts the Boss and defeats him in battle. The boss gives him a microfilm of the inheritance before the Snake reluctantly kills him. Snake and EVA escape to Alaska and spend the night together. EVA disappears before morning with microfilm, leaving a tape that reveals that she is a Chinese spy sent to steal the Inheritance for China. He also reveals that the boss is not the fault, but that Volgin was ordered to infiltrate their ranks and find the Inheritance to return to America. However, due to Volgin's nuclear attack, the boss had to be considered a traitor and die at the hands of the snake to prove the innocence of the United States. A demoralized snake is given the title of big boss and is awarded the distinguished service cross by the president Johnson. In Arlington National Cemetery adorns the unmarked tombstone of the Snake boss and greets him with tears. Ocelot, He telephones the KGB chief Director to suggest that the KGB use information about the operation Virtuous and snake eater missions to blackmail the United States during future negotiations.OCELOT then informs the CIA director that the microfilm stolen by EVA is fake and that half of the philosopher's inheritance is now in the hands of America, and the other half is held by the KGB, revealing himself as the MAN.The gameplay is as follows.in this game consisting of 11 chapters, you are trying to complete the tasks. The music of the game is beautiful. If you are not too obsessed with graphics and you are retro if you like games, this game is for you.My rating for the game: 10/10 (y) Good games to everyone 🙂

No joke, this is better than every Bond theme. It functions as both a pastiche of those kinds of songs, but I believe it eclipses them as well. It has this sincerity that pierces through the silliness. I used to laugh everytime Cynthia Harrell (just absolutely annihilating her job here) sings "Someday you feed on a tree frog", but the more I think about it and Naked Snake's tragic story, the more gloom infects me.

If you sang this at a karaoke bar, everyone would be singing by the end even if they have no familiarity with any video game ever.

Do I think this song can't be topped? No. But I consider this the bar to clear.

Someone talk Fiona Apple into writing some songs for video games.

The recent James Bond could only dream of having an opening song like this.

Playing it for the first time... Well, not actually, this was the first MGS game I played as I thought that it could be best to do a chronological playthrough of the games, but soon enough was dissuaded and went to play the first MGS. On the opening sequence right now, and I just realized that I missed one key element. Already in the opening, Kojima is breaking expectations by emulating -establishing intertextuality- with the opening of The Plant level of MGS (while subverting and contrasting it pretty clearly): from underwater to air infiltration; masks within masks. What a fantastic series!

Final Thoughts:

A big improvement over Metal Gear Solid 2 with a story that's on par with Metal Gear Solid 1 for me. Snake eater is one of the best video game opening themes ever! The game mechanics feel much more improved with both CQC and the first-person angle, even if the button schemes are still a bit clunky compared to 2010's standards. The characters are iconic and memorable, even if the animation style is even more out-there exaggerated with all that 20-minutes of Revolver Ocelot gun juggling. MGS3 definitely also has its key memorable moments, from climbing the tallest ladder I've ever seen in a game to the ending that's outright tragic.

Definitely objectively the best Metal Gear Solid game currently that excels with a great story, atmosphere, and at least the controls are more functional than MGS 1&2.

(Comments have been copied from my post on the MGS3: Subsistence version)

Not only the best Metal Gear game, but probably the most affecting story Hideo Kojima has told in one of his games. Snake Eater is the series firing on all cylinders, telling a rare origin story that actually has massive implications on the overarching narrative of the franchise and leads perfectly into the quadrilogy capping Guns of the Patriots. It does an amazing job of counterbalancing the winking subversion of Sons of Liberty with something more grounded and relatable while also perfecting and expanding upon mechanics found in the previous games. Add an evocative 60's Cold War spy thriller aesthetic, and you've got one of the all time greats.

While I didn't love Sons of Liberty, I of course played the next installment and at first I liked it even less than Sons. While Snake Eater has a huge plot and it moves a lot, the game is pretty much split in two. The first half takes place in the woods and the second half in a facility.

The forest half, for me was tiring. There was a lot of go there, do that, go there and the plot didn't move that fast for me. Also I got really tired of the missions. Still it had the toughest fight for me, which was The End. The rest of the Cobras were nice and I always loved how they had a deeper meaning to them. The Pain for sure was the least interesting, but even he had something to him. I especially enjoyed The Sorrow and the kind of mind game he played.

But the forest part got tiring for me. Still once we get to the facility I got really hooked. I mean it took me two months to go through the forest part, because I wasn't interested and I didn't really care to move on, but I played most of the facility stuff in one night (about 5 hours), because of how hooked I was. I think the story took some really interesting turns and I really loved, how Snake always was in dangerous and he got his asses kicked many times and that added more to the story, even if you knew that he is alive in the previous installments and this is a prequel.

Also combat-wise I found it much easier than Sons of Liberty, but that might have to do that I got used to it. I really liked the voice acting and the characters arcs were incredible. I loved how there was this political side to the game and I enjoyed it a lot, even if I do think that it got a tad more preachy than it should, at the end. Still I really liked the combats and the game plays with your expectations and certain game cliches really nicely.

All in all it is a better game than Sons of Liberty and if the forest part was less stretched out I would have enjoyed it much more. Still a really well told story that felt extremely cinematic, with great characters.

I remember first playing this game on the 3ds as a young kid, getting halfway through before my younger brother accidentally deleted my save, so he could go on to beat it. I then remember shrugging it off, and never giving metal gear all that much thought until finally playing the original game a few years back. Since then, I’ve been hooked, loving each entry, and updating my Metal Gear Obsessed younger brother with each game I cleared. He kept urging me to play through MGS3, but I never seemed to be in the right place or time to give it a shot. After years, and after finally picking this game up for the PS2, I sat down with my girlfriend, popped it in, and played through Metal Gear Solid 3 over the course of 20 or so days.

I have a lot to praise the game on, so let me get my few gripes out of the way first. Firstly, the camera angles in a few spots make it hard to determine where enemies I’m trying to avoid are, and not being able to fully control the camera makes it difficult to backtrack in certain areas without alerting the guards. I eventually learned to get around this by using the first-person mode more often, but I still wish I could control the camera myself. (An issue that I see has been remedied in later remakes of MGS 3) Secondly, the graphics, while they have aged better than other PS2 games, still have their weak points. In sequences where I needed to aim in the first person, especially during chase sequences, the murky and muddy visuals made it difficult to tell what I was aiming at, and where I was being shot from. Generally, this is one of the best looking PS2 games I’ve played, but it has got its ugly bits. Lastly and least importantly, while I love the Cure system in the game, and management of healing items to fix broken bones, cuts and bullet wounds; having to open through 2 menus and click on 4 different cure objects just to heal my bullet wound was very slow and interrupted the core action. I wish there was a separate menu in game that allowed for me to quickly patch up my wounds without halting the game mid battle to restore my health. One would argue that you could bind the cure items to your quick menu, but it consumes far too much of your 8 available inventory slots, only to heal one injury no less. Now that I’ve gotten my few complaints out of the way, I want to talk about all there is to love and about Metal Gear Solid 3.

As usual, Kojima’s writing is both fun and equally as engaging. The characters are a blast, ranging from in depth, with believable motivations, to downright campy and fun. (My favorite campy characters being both Volgin, and The Fury) The game also carries a strong anti-war and anti-nuclear message, that is pushed to its limits in scenes with The Sorrow, and The Boss herself. The thematic message flows throughout ever facet of the game, but especially in both gameplay and writing.

I would be remiss to skip out on discussing the hilariously forced, but meaningful 3-minute ladder climb halfway through the game. All I can say is, What a thrill.

The soundtrack itself is full of atmospheric tunes that help immerse the player in Naked Snake’s mission, whether you’re sneaking through an enemy base crawling with soldiers or gunning down a giant nuclear warhead machine. Aside from Snake Eater and Way to Fall, my favorite track is probably Ocelot Youth – Confrontation.

While I had some difficulty with the Camera Angles and Cure Menu, everything else about the gameplay is spectacular. Such an extreme level of care and detail went into every aspect of the game. From each piece of equipment you can collect and its application, to the various camouflage you can wear, the various ways to bring down enemies, distract them, scare them or hold them at gunpoint, the styles of play available are nearly limitless. I remember picking off enemies with a sniper rifle from across the map, only to accidentally shoot the walkie-talkie out of the hand of an alerted guard. In just one playthrough, I still feel like I have only scratched the surface of what is possible with the mechanics available, and I know I will have to revisit this game sometime in the future.

I know I cried like a baby at the end credits, but this game really blew me away, even approaching two decades after its release. While MGS3 may be my favorite, and may be the best of Kojima’s works (Cold take, I know), I think my girlfriend and I had more fun playing through MGS2 together, with all its cheese and Mad bombers on Rollerblades.

At the end of the day, this may be the best game I play this year, and certainly deserves the legendary status it has garnered. How could I give this game anything, but:

Final Score: Solid 9

I really enjoyed Metal Gear Solid 3, but hated playing it.

What I mean by this is that I can not stand the controls for this game in the slightest. The controls are frustrating and it is difficult to get Snake to do the things you want to do. I also dislike how most of the boss fights require specific gear to defeat them, but you didn't collect the equipment before the fight started, it's difficult to continue on with the game. I understand that it some respect this makes sense with the story, but I'm sure there is a way for the player to be encouraged to collect specific equipment before the fight starts.

These two things ruined my experience to the point that I stopped playing after fighting The Fury. Playing was zero fun at this point.

I really enjoy how cinematic Kojima's games are and wanted to finish the story, so I watched the story on youtube and really enjoyed the vision Kojima was going for. As a fan of over the top action films and any work of art that has major anti-war themes, Metal Gear appeals to me in that it takes both of these themes and utilizes my favorite medium of entertainment of video games.

I would like people to know that I may have been more forgiving had I started playing these games in the order that they were released, but my first MGS game was The Phantom Pain. The story and cut scenes are 5/5 but the controls are 1/5.

I played Sons of Liberty right before playing this, so I was able to immediately notice and appreciate gameplay improvements. No more fixed camera, the camo index, CQC, and more. I had to do some background reading to understand the significance of playing as Big Boss, but after having played a few MGS titles and the aforementioned reading, I must say I find Big Boss to be an infinitely more interesting character than Solid Snake, though admittedly I haven't had the chance to play GotP. Back to Snake Eater though, the game had some fantastic boss fights and some terrible ones. The Pain and the Fear were bested easily enough, The Fury ironically caused me to rage quit a few times, The Sorrow wasn't even a fight but it was thematically interesting, The End was seriously pulse-pounding (one of the best boss fights I've ever played), Volgin got easier as his segments progressed, and The Boss killed me more times than I care to admit, but we of course make a nod to the strangest boss of them all: the ladder. The story was dynamic, all the twists were surprising but made sense, especially in the context and set up a sensible backstory for the development of the Metal Gear weapons and while the Patriots weren't founded in this game, there were some subtle hints about who is behind them later. There was a lot more sex humor, actually kind of to the point of annoying at times: there's really no reason for EVA to wear her shirt like that, nor was that romance at all necessary, especially since it doesn't really seem to be a factor later in the series. Great game though. I don't know if the original Snake Eater has this, but the one that comes with the HD collection comes with the original 2D Metal Gear games, so I intend to play through those at some point and witness the clash of Solid Snake and Big Boss.
