mpbarlow's review of Super Mario RPG

It’s a decent game, but having never played the original I didn’t get any nostalgia bonus and ultimately didn’t find it all that engaging.

It’s funny (by game standards at least) and it has a lot of heart, though there isn’t much depth to either the gameplay or the story. I also found the 3D graphics of the remake to be quite charmless.

It would make a terrific first RPG for kids or people new to the genre though.

Worth the wait

I never had a super nes so i never got to play this when I was young.

We picked up a switch 2 for my 5 yo son for Christmas and I managed to snag a cheap copy of mario rpg. We played through together with me handling the controls but him making a lot of decisions. I didn’t realize how short this is so it ended up being a great way to teach him about RPGs without him getting bored or frustrated. He is very mario pilled at the moment having recently finished Mario Odyssey. He loved rpg and would ask if we could play another section every night.

The updated game has a charming presentation, easy controls and some fun battle mechanics. I could do without the platforming sections as square cant make mario jump feel good. The puzzles were fun while the sidequests mostly failed to live up to my expectations but were skippable when they didnt seem interesting or if the minigame controls were frustrating. We played on easy and beat it in about 14 hours. Ill consider a hard run down the road on my own.

So Cute
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

I think I said that in my last update that the game was between a 3 and a 4. The last few hours of the game pushed it solidly to a 3. I was loving all the cute moments and they just stopped appearing in the last 2 dungeon areas. The ending failed to capitalize on the strongest aspects of the game.

Driving Force: Cute Character interactions. The combat system and the overworld platforming aren't terrible but they are not things that will inspire you to boot up this game.

Style and Presentation: Very adorable toy chest character design (chubby Mario). I honestly wish they had a added a greater variety of character animations. I feel like the plot explanation via transformation was incredibly funny and think they could have done to implement this into combat. I have to of course mention how beautiful all the cutscenes look. Best part about adding a new character to the party was getting the new triple attacks. The menus well designed and easy to use. It is sort of odd that you can't use items from the pause menu.

Gameplay Loop: Mario and friends are directed to the likely location of the next …

Gameplay Loop: Mario and friends are directed to the likely location of the next star. Platforming and turn based combat challenges are performed to reach the destination and then finally obtain the star in that region. In the best sections of the game, there are many moments of humor between party member and the world. The main problem with this game is these moments are not often enough and the different gameplay aspects often feel as though they are occurring in different world entirely.

I would still recommend this game if you like Paper Mario. Paper Mario does more to inject the humor of the story into combat and the platforming elements are a lot less janky than this game. The original Super Mario RPG served as a fantastic template for that game and feel like the remake could have taken some elements from it. I had my fun with this game and don't let the negative of my review keep you from enjoying this pint sized Mario adventure.

Beautiful Remake But It Feels Geared Towards Kids and Non-Experienced RPG Gamers
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

I never played the original, as the N64 was my first console, but I decided to give this game a try due to the hype and having no clue who Geno even is. Overall the game is fine, but it feels like a children's final fantasy. I found the action commands fun to time, but other than that the game is fairly easy and the character design of the original enemies leaves much to desire. Could have used some darker looking enemies and more depth in the story and map, but it was fun seeing the inspiration behind one my favorite games of all time, Paper Mario 64. Overall 6/10

Had a lot of fun with this one. Never felt too grindy. There wasn’t an annoying amount of dialogue and it was just a whimsical adventure. Mallow was an awesome character. And having bowser on the team was fun. Honestly really like the combat system with the gauge and flower power management. Peach was vital as a healer at times.

A faithful remake of a childhood favorite
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

I grew up on Mario RPG, on SNES. And this is a faithful remake of the original game. It’s a charming little RPG that has some cool characters, bosses, etc., and even post-game content added. I absolutely love this game and highly recommend it.

The reason this isn’t 5/5 is the cost. It’s just not worth the $60 it cost. It’s an incredibly short, quick game, even with post-game content. And so, despite my love for it, I’m just not sure it’s worth the cost for that.

A great first RPG for anyone at the very least curious of the genre, not too long not too difficult and very much streamlined for modern audiences through this remake

Nostalgia isn't a factor

This was my first outing with Super Mario RPG, and Mario RPG's in general. I've had the Mario and Luigi games in my backlog forever now, and I'm going to play them in the future, especially after my experience with this game. Overall, I had fun with Super Mario RPG. I was debating between a 3-4/5, so realistically I'd give this game a 3.5/5 (not a bad score in my books btw).

Story: Pretty basic. I like the side stories being told here, but otherwise a standard Mario story thrown into an RPG world. The secret boss is really the only creative part of this story that takes it for a loop. About what I was expecting from a Mario RPG story.

Characters: I love the characters in this game. Mallow and Geno are great additions (I want to see them in more material now, I get it!), and Bowser is hilariously written and fun to see in this game. Peach and Mario are pretty one note and copy pasted from the original universe. I like how Mario is portrayed as a Godly hero throughout the lands here, and Peach is fun to have along on the adventure. The 5 …

The 5 party members are great and bounce well off of one another. I really like the short side stories and goals for Mallow and Geno in particular. Great characters. The side characters here are also entertaining and loveable. I enjoyed Frog Sage, Booster, and of course my main man Jonathan Jones. Booster is just Wario with a helping of childlike wonder so I love that. Jonathan Jones reminds me of Meta Knight from Kirby, and I love his design, fight, and personality.

Gameplay: The turn based combat is fun, but can get repetitive at times. Once you unlock all of the characters spells, you pretty much have no room for variation. The characters serve a single purpose in combat for the most part, which is fine for this game. I wasn't expecting a super in depth combat system like other RPJs and JRPGs, and I do really like the action commands. Boss battles were fun and none of them felt repetitive. My main complaint with this game is in it's platforming and moving outside of battle. I hated it. Mario is so weighty to control, it feels like he weights 55 tons. His jumps are awkward and hard to get the hang of. People might say that the "platforming" isn't the main focus of the game, and while they're correct in that it's not a main focus, it does have a great influence on the gameplay. Some of the courses are BRUTAL in the movement department. Whether that be due to enemy placement, the jumps/platforms, or a combination of both, the movement in this game didn't jive with me. The most apparent parts where the bad movement stuck out to me was in the sunken ship, bean valley, Bowser's castle, and the factory. I feel like this is going to be glossed over and looked at with rolling eyes, but I genuinely did not enjoy the way Mario moved in this game. Maybe I'm putting too much stock into how Mario moves in his traditional games, but I feel like the movement and jumping could have been implemented better.

Oh yeah, soundtrack is pretty good here too. Elegy, Booster tower, Booster's theme, Star Hill Theme, Culex's theme, conversation with culex, nimbus land theme, and the ending theme were my favorites. Andddddd that's pretty much it! A nice addition to add to my "played" collection. Probably won't revisit this one anytime soon, but really want to get started on the Mario and Luigi series to see how the formula developed here translates. Bye bye!

I definitely understand why this is such a culturally impactful game. The amount of soul and charm in the game are immense, I was smiling or laughing all throughout. The gameplay is a pretty great balance between simple and complicated, it might be a little too simple but I think that's fine. My only complaint is that I feel like the timing on some moves was a little weird, but it was very satisfying to get well timed attacks. The boss fights were all quite fun.

The game looks really pretty and the cutscenes are cool, but I do have slight problems. I think that Mario and Peach and to some extent Bowser just look really weird proportion wise, and because of that in cutscenes they just look off. My other complaint is that for a lot of areas that are like in a cave, only like the middle of the screen has the environemnt, and then the rest of the screen is just a black void. Similar to this, some rooms make it very obtuse where you have to actually go to get to the next screen, it only adds like 5-10 seconds, but the room transition locations are …

Story was nothing crazy but I didn't expect it to be, the characters that make up the story were great though. The one thing I will say is that I think the Smithy was not nearly as cool as a final boss that I thought he should have been, but all of the boss re-matches and the Culex fights make up for that. I think the game is a little short, especially if bought at the $60 starting price, I beat all the bosses and rematches in 12 hours, but I think for the $30 I got this game for, it was worth the price, and I had a really good time. High 8/10 for me.

Never played the original as a kid, and played for a while on the SNES classic and enjoyed it. Looking forward to first full experience as a remake version on my switch 2.

Although dead simple mechanically, this game is a fun and rewarding experience that faithfully recreated the original. I'd highly recommend this for someone who wants to get younger children into the turn-based RPG genre.

$60 is a bit steep for what's here, but that's Nintendo for you.

If there was way to not go through the desert again I missed it and the journey up to Nimbus Land was annoying. "Platforming" in this game can be challenging to due camera angles (basically the fact that game is presented from an isometric viewpoint) and the lack of depth to the environment. As I have I said my other updates, I play this game for cute worldbuilding so an annoying section every now and then is tolerable.

Wallow is so oblivious. He is also possibly the most humble creature ever borne. Right now the game sits somewhere between 3 or 4 stars. I know that it is designed to be approachable for any level of player, but I still think they could have done more to translate the cuteness of the story into the combat. The process of writing updates each time I play helps me understand my thoughts on it more. I used to not understand why people wouldn't just do a review, but I totally get it now.

The interactions between Bowser and his previous employed soldiers in Monstro town were so cute. Bowser is not even upset that they left to start lives without him because he lost their home to the primary antagonist. The idea of Bowser caring for his citizens is a funny concept and even though this joke is repeated a few times, the variations still got a laugh out of me. Combat system is getting old. Peach is just so busted with how huge her heals are. I really don't have to consider my option carefully. Its matter of getting at least some of the action commands correct.

So we break up the wedding (after a comical amount of time trying to time breaking down the doors), we don't fight booster or the chefs who are mad that the wedding is canceled but rather the cake. I think it could have been executed better. I am not fully against it; they just don't lean into the joke enough. On the other hand, Bowser and Mario explaining the situation at Bowser's castle was hilarious. Something about these sections just has me giggling every time. After Peach joins the party, we just walk around an area with stars and just pick it up. This feels very random without tying it to any of the other stories. Comes across as very anti-climactic. I did just look up the puzzle to get past the tour in the pirate ship. Partly because I assumed the hints would be viewable as items in my inventory but they were not. The work feels unnecessary and like homework compared to similar areas in other dungeons. I'm still having fun but I am worried that game will run out of cute moments to keep me playing.

The game really does just pull the two clowns boss fight from out of thin air. It was a solid fight. Being able to switch out party members with status effects and who are downed is incredibly useful (Honestly feels unfair to my opponent to be able to do this). The mini game of chasing Booster up the mountain was surprisingly difficult to time to jumps. Barely got any flowers. I have started to consider why I am enjoying the game and what drives me to keep booting up my switch. Its not the combat system (which functions fine) and its not the story. I just want silly adventures and hilarious character moments. Everything else about the game is a vehicle to get to these aspects. I was giggling as the snifflers looked behind the curtains for the Mario doll and have no reaction when I help them get it. Even sillier was that he had a doll of Mario and of Samus Aran. This game has perfected cuteness in style and presentation and I hope its able to continue holding my interest.

Just defeated the bomb boss in the mines.

First thing I beat was the boss with 4 eyes that looks like a dog. Watching it swallow Wallow was funny, but I expected that it would have more effect on the battle. Going down the river rapids after the water shoots you out of the sewers honestly felt like a bad mario party minigame. It short and mildly fun I guess. The frog music puzzle was neat and the reward you get from the frog coin shop is powerful (80 hp to party). Finally added Geno to the party. The best part about that was seeing the Triple Attack cutscene. All of the cutscenes in this game are animated so beautifully without looking entirely unlike the live gameplay. I died three times to the bomb boss. The timing for not getting hit by the bombs was so much earlier than expected. It felt fully necessary to hit these too as I only had one revive and one health item to heal the entire party at once aaaaand 2 unblocked hits is KO. Currently navigating through the Keru Sewers after defeating the first major boss.

The music that plays in bowser's castle feels off somehow but that might just be related to my TV. The timing for the actions commands was somewhat earlier than expected but pretty easy to nail. To be honest, they felt very necessary to beat the first boss which I died to once. The game describes fast travel as jumping which I think is cute. The whole aesthetic is adorable and I love how this game, the link's awakening reboot, and echoes of wisdom all share a similar style. Mario explaining the situation via transformation into various characters will never not be funny. Battle music is great and hopefully won't become annoying in the future. I hope the game can maintain this level of cuteness and balanced challenge.

What a cute and funny adventure. It's a pleasant RPG that is not too difficult, but is never boring either, as it is not too long. The writing is fantastic and I loved the characters both new and old. The monster and world designs are also very fun. I never played the original, but this seems like a great remake to me!
