A modern reimagining of one of the most iconic games of all time, Final Fantasy VII Remake harnesses the very latest technology to recreate and expand Square Enix's legendary RPG adventure for the current generation. Set in a post-industrial fantasy world that has fallen under the control of the shadowy Shinra Electric Power Company, take on the role of Cloud Strife - a mercenary and former member of Shinra's elite Soldier unit - and team up with anti-Shinra organization Avalanche as they step-up their resistance.

yk this game is fine until about chapter 12 when you realize none of it will evolve or go anywhere until the last two hours or so.

I thought with a 4.3 star rating I was going to play an unforgivable game, but honestly this game was very unmemorable, the quests were lackluster, the item and upgrade systems were too busy and took away from the game mechanics, I'd give it 3 stars but I gave it 2 to try and offset the 4.3 star rating

i was trying to play something new, something different and yes i have done it. Final Fantasy VII - Remake is one of these gems that everyone should try at least just for curiosity. There are a lot of things that this game can offer starting from the basics such as the gameplay and continuing with the wonderful story telling. The athmosphere in this game is incredible i felt immerse in the universe of midgard from the start to end i was always intrigued on what could happen next, there was always the surprise factor in the gameplay.

What could go wrong? What is next?

There is not doubt in my heart that this is a masterpiece and i can't recommend you enough to invest your free time playing this absurdly incredible piece of art.

PROS

  • Soundtrack - Delightful and it won the best sound track in the game awards 2020. Well deserved IMO.
  • Story - I don't want to go in deep on this point but this was the reason i was so hooked up in finishing the game. Made me shed a some tears.

  • Gameplay - So funny and it doesn't get old. There's always something new and new combos to learn.
  • Companions / Friends - They have their own personality making the game alive and really enjoyable due to the interactions between the different characters. I don't know there were some moments where i was thinking that this was an anime or something like a movie. The characters were really well made.
  • Antagonist - Yeap.

CONS

  • Sliding animation while walking /sliding throught walls - this was something that was ok to help other zone to load while doing this but this was absurdly used. Not the end of the world but annoying for sure.
  • Duration - i'd have liked to have more things to do, more hours, more exploring. it last enough but from the fan standpoint i'd really loved to have more.
  • Wedge - Annoying af. fr dog.

These cons are not CONS that would ruin the game for you i'm just tying to find something bad about this game but at the end of the day it's more my point of view.

Finally i want to mention that if you are undecisive on playing this game i'd be the light in the path for you: Go ahead and play this Masterpiece.

I've rarely played a game with so little restraint, and I mean that as a compliment. This game makes good on any opportunity to have something amazing and ridiculous happen. Riding in an elevator? Yeah, we can throw a boss fight in there. It also has awesome music.

Roll Credits?: Yes!

Surprised/Let Down/As Expected: Surprised at the depth of the combat and engaging pacing of the story

Favorite Mechanic or Narrative Moment: ability for the game to live up to the minigames and overall game-y-ness of the original while still turning everything up to 11 and actually meaningfully expanding on the original

Amazing game but purists beware
This review is for the PlayStation 5 version

This game was amazing and just what I needed in this stressful point in my life. I wasn't really expecting anything going in. I played through the original FF7, but I remember not being that engrossed with it. Like, it was okay, but it wasn't amazing. It was probably a victim of overhype since I played it several years later and I had already been spoiled that Aeris/Aerith was going to die, so I wasn't surprised when it actually happened in the game.

My husband got the free PS5 upgrade and I figured why not give this a go. I was not expecting it to grab me as much as it did.

The story is what drew me in. I think they did a great job explaining and refining the story. I care about the characters, especially the side characters. Jessie and Wedge can be a little stereotypical at times, but at least they gave them more personality. And of course, I'm totally shipping Cloud x Aerith now for whatever reason. You can't tell me otherwise. And Cloud is kind of a Gary Stu but oh well.

I'm really hoping that in the second game they find a way …

I'm really hoping that in the second game they find a way to let Aerith live. They sure hint at it a lot... so maybe there's hope? I originally played this game thinking Aerith was definitely going to die, but I'm glad to see it hasn't happened... yet.

The game is not without it's flaws, but I'm willing to overlook it. The world is gorgeous and the battle system is really good. Thank goodness for Easy mode because I don't think I have the patience to enjoy this on Normal. The side quests felt like a chore for me, and they are optional, although at the end of one of the Chapters I actually got guilted by Barret for not doing them... so geez Barret guess I gotta now..

I wasn't attached to the original FF7 story, so I don't mind changes or the simplification. I also didn't mind the removal of the turn-based battles. But if you love the FF7 story with all your heart (and for some reason still haven't played this game 2+ years later lol), tread carefully because there will be some changes. And it feels like they are going to change a lot of things going forward with the story too.

A Love Letter To Veterans Of The Series While Welcoming Newcomers!
This review is for the PlayStation 5 version

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is both a love letter to the original game as well as an excellent entry for newcomers to the story. This is only part 1 of which as of now seems to be a 3 part game (yet to be verified). Part 1 takes you up to about the end of disc 1 of the original game, with this all taking place within Midgar. There have been some changes made to the story that I'm really excited to see how they play out with the rest of the games, while enough care was taken to not anger fans of the original. The combat feels like a hybrid between the Kingdom Hearts games, and FF15. You control one character at a time, but can issue commands and abilities of other members of your party, or completely switch to playing them during the battle. There is a 'Classic' game mode/setting which I believe makes the battles turn based as in the original release but I have yet to try that out. The combat is really smooth, looks flashy, and feels fantastic to play. Even small attention to detail such as the materia you choose will be visible on …

Graphically, this game is gorgeous. There are two versions you can choose, either graphical fidelity or performance mode. The graphical mode seems to lower the fps a little bit but have the details be a bit sharper. I started with this, but then switched to performance mode as the graphics do not take a big hit yet the movements and presentation becomes butter smooth. The only downside to this game is there is quite a bit of filler content to try and stretch the play time out. What should be a quick jaunt through an area will get repeated rooms, or a 'puzzle' that requires some extra time and movement around to unlock the path forward. Some areas just feel like they overstay their welcome. All in all though, you won't regret playing this game whether you are a newcomer to the series or a long time fan!

Beautiful & fun, It definitely holds a new spot as one of my favorite games of all time. You can tell there was a lot of love & care put into making this. The story was easy to follow, the characters were likable & I cared about them, and the battle/weapon system wasn't too overly complicated. I enjoyed this game and would def replay it in the future, so I really recommend it! The ONLY thing I would change is the slow side moving motion when you're squeezing through a tight spot :P

--edit Just finished INTERmission w/Yuffie & Sonon, Also just as good! I loved the story and synchronized abilities.

A great experience marred by frustrations.
This review is for the PlayStation 5 version

I first played Final Fantasy 7 years ago on PSOne when I was just a kid. It was awesome, and so when the remake was announced I was eager to try it -- yet it sat on my shelf for over a year. Now that I've finished it, I can say I should have played it sooner, but it wasn't perfect.

First, the good. The characterization is out of this world. I care so much more about each and every character than I did in the original. I couldn't get enough of the developing relationships between characters. Also, the graphics -- the game is beautiful, especially on a PS5. The story is also different enough that it keeps it intriguing without losing the charm of the original.

But now, the bad. Combat is irritating to a tremendous degree. I can't count the number of times I cast Magicka only for it to be flung into a wall, or worse: to hit an enemy only to have no effect. The same holds true for special moves. If I am knocked down or interrupted while using something, my ATB gauge shouldn't drain. There should also be a way to cancel an ability. …

I found combat immensely frustrating. There were also "forced slow" segments of the game that couldn't be skipped. It's a pet peeve of mine when a game makes you walk slowly through a section that's basically an exposition dump, and those abounded throughout FF7R.

Will I play the next one? Absolutely -- but I'll know what to expect this time, and hopefully there will be options to improve the low points of the game.

Beautiful but it didn't really capture me as much as I hoped
This review is for the PlayStation 4 version

It was a beautifully rendered, solid adventure so I am rating it highly (4/5) but I didn't like it enough to give it 5 stars. Not entirely sure why but I'll go into possible issues below.

First off, to give credit where it's due, the game looks really beautiful, it is impressive what they can do with the modest specs of a PS4. Also, I recently got a monitor with HDR and the in-game HDR support really gives the visuals an extra oomph, especially the lighting. Furthermore, the atmosphere, music, environments, characters are all beautiful and really enjoyable. I've played with the original Japanese voice acting and English subtitles, I like it that way as an anime fan.

The main issues that I think brought it down from my perspective:

Combat

Maybe because I've never gotten far into a Final Fantasy game besides Final Fantasy XIV but I really disliked the combat straight away and it took me like 15+ hrs to start to feel kinda comfortable with it. I did play on Normal difficulty which is the highest available for a first playthrough. But I didn't really get stuck on fights, so it wasn't an issue of sheer difficulty. …

It didn't help that the default settings for targeting are really awkward, I needed to tweak that and then it was more usable. Once I've gotten used to it, it was decent but still didn't feel strongly about it.

Story

In a story-driven game, if the story doesn't capture me, then I won't feel very invested in the game. This entire game almost felt like one big drawn out introduction. Though simply the overall highly polished execution level of everything kept me interested enough to keep going, but I was never really "hooked". The last few chapters did capture my interest quite a bit more but then it gets pretty weird in my opinion, dunno what to think about it.

Conclusion

I don't want this to sound too negative, it is a great game overall, that is definitely worth playing, as my rating shows and I'm curious what the next installment brings. I just thought it might end up being one of my favourites, but it falls short of that.

WillShakesbeer's review of Final Fantasy VII Remake
This review is for the PlayStation 4 version

The game is an impressive achievement, for sure. It's beautiful and the new combat system is a success. It's a great compromise between traditional turn-based strategy and modern action gameplay.

The character relationships are well-developed, but the later-game story is not at all newbie-friendly. I played the original 20 years ago, so I vaguely remembered some plot details, and the story still didn't make much sense to me. I imagine anyone who hasn't played the original will be even more confused.

The biggest problem, in my opinion, is the bloat and padding - SO MANY CUTSCENES, minigames/puzzles that take too long, and a bunch of boring side quests ("find the cats!" "find the kids!"). I wish they had cut 10 hours off the thing and provided a little more clarity for new players. Or better yet, just remake the original as one game! Not multiple 30-hour games.

Fun, challenging, magical ride — no nostalgia necessary

I never had that special childhood experience of playing the original Final Fantasy VII that cemented it as the greatest game ever made for so many people. Luckily, this first chapter in Square-Enix’s modern retelling is a wild ride so instantly magical and gripping that I didn’t really need to.

Presentation

The first thing everyone will notice about this game is just how amazing it looks and sounds. Midgar may be an urban sci-fi hellhole most of the time, but it’s full of patches of beauty, from huge breathtaking views to small pockets of greenery in just the right spots. Outside dungeons, the world bustles with chatter and movement that does wonders for developing a sense of place. Music is just fantastic, with strong themes and variation throughout the game. Voice acting for most named characters is superb, and combined with their strong visual designs and dialogue, this cast of heroes and villains is extremely easy to love.

Voice acting for most named characters is superb, and combined with their strong visual designs and dialogue, this cast of heroes and villains is extremely easy to love.

Story

The expansion of 6 hours of story to 30 is a bit of a double-edged sword, but mostly a positive. The protagonists and their companions are given plenty of room to breathe, whether in lighthearted moments of camaraderie, worries about the future, or reflection on the consequences of their actions. They really sell the high stakes behind the game’s conflicts, which can be a real roller coaster of emotions. Chapter 4 is an early highlight that doesn’t move the plot along at all and wasn’t even in the original, but that feels crucial to the emotional core of this game for how it provides levity and bonds its characters to one another and to the player. The world of Midgar and all its factions and history and locations are genuinely interesting to learn about, and some side plot threads are great diversions from the main story that still contribute to the player’s understanding of it.

Gameplay-heavy areas unfortunately occasionally overstay their welcome, get repeated for minimal payoff, or walk in unannounced right after an emotional moment that needed more time to settle. To be fair, life is like that too, but this kind of padding seems driven by the business which needed to justify this as a full game but couldn’t realistically fit in any more of the following plot, and it occasionally harms the pacing. For most of the game, it’s fine, but I think they could have cut out 3 hours or so and had a tighter experience that still had all the good new additions to flesh everything out. The ending few hours really ratchet up the stakes in a story that I‘m not sure really needed it—but it’s a cool sequence, so I guess it works out.

Gameplay

Maybe the biggest surprise of this game is just how fun its combat is. I felt like the spirit of full-party control and ATB decision-making is still here, but stripped of its fully menu-driven roots, it’s allowed to run freely and feel so much more responsive, dynamic, and exciting. The meaty challenge provided by the game’s Normal difficulty makes the big, cinematic boss fights a real thrill to pull off—and wow, some of those are just spectacular. The Materia and weapon upgrade systems give some interesting flexibility to how you balance your party and I’d love to see that expanded in the sequel. Checkpointing is (usually) extremely generous and cuts out so much tedium from the older JRPG format!

——-

This game is setting a new standard for action-JRPGs, and stripped free of previous decades’ technical limitations, it is fully realizing so much of what made Final Fantasy amazing over the years. It should not be missed!

Honestly? Better than I ever imagined it would be. And this from someone who's played all single-player FFs save I–III and considers the original VII to be middle-to-lower end of the pack (personal order: VI/XII—tied for top—Tactics, IV, X, XV, V, VII, IX, VIII, XIII). It does what a remake should—it expands without sacrificing, it corrects wrongdoings (speaking as an enby person who was thrilled with how they reconfigured the Honey Bee Inn segment), it feels new while at the same time being very familiar, it looks STUNNING, and... let's be real, that soundtrack is worth three of the five stars on its own. It's likely my favourite JRPG soundtrack since FFXII, and it feels like they had something to prove. And as someone easily swayed by soundtracks (as in, an amazing soundtrack will, for me, take a mediocre film or game and make it brilliant—Drive is a perfect case-in-point) and my nostalgia for them, the ways they've expanded and built upon what previously existed are fantastic. Nowhere is this more present than the Jenova Dreamweaver fight—by the start of the fight's third act... chills.

And all that without touching on the biggest, most spoiler-heavy thing of all: ... ... ... ... ... ... ... This is a sequel, not a remake. It's an alt-history sequel in the same universe. It's fucking Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver, where Kain is split between Sephiroth and Aerith (both knowing the future and wanting to change it, albeit in different ways), while Raziel is Cloud—an unwitting pawn slowly glomming on to what's being asked of him.

There aren't words for how much I love this approach. I mean, just the guts of it—to take a company's most (undeservedly, IMO) beloved story and challenge and dismantle it so completely... it will be a huge disappointment if further entries don't capitalize on this. I've played the original so many times but can honestly say I have no idea where they go from here, and I love that.

What the actual fuck is this ending? The boss I just reached is the sixth one I've faced in a row with basically no other gameplay in between, just boss fight, cutscene, boss fight, cutscene, boss fight, cutscene... I peeked ahead at a guide and there's another 2 bosses still to go after this, the first of whom has 6 phases? And then it'll roll credits. This is a mind numbingly dull way to finish a game that I was really vibing with. I genuinely enjoyed every single minute of it up to now, but by final boss #6 of 8 I'm just sick of this.

I've been finally getting around to playing this. Here are my thoughts on the game as of about 2/3 of the way through, in disorganized bullet points:

  • It's cool to see this cast as something more specific than the blocky polygons that my mildly face-blind imagination was never good at mentally envisioning more like real people. The lip-synching animations are really hit or miss, though. With some characters it's so well done you don't even think about the fact that there was work done to sync the lips to the speech, and with others it's like you can see exactly where the line is between the animated mouth area and the static rest of the face, and the overall effect is like one of those ecard websites where you upload a person's photo and it turns it into a badly animated singing e-card.
  • I was pronouncing mako wrong my whole life! I thought it was MAY-ko, but it's MAH-ko.
  • There are a lot of mini-games, often required to progress, and I kept getting nervous going into them that I'd be bad at them, but I'm finding they're all so forgiving that it's almost impossible to fail them. There have been …

There have been multiple mini-games where you had to successfully do something multiple times, and you could fail as many times as you wanted in between successes, instead of needing to succeed X times in a row. Some of them also dynamically adapt by getting easier automatically if you fail a time or two. I'm guessing the sweaty nerds probably hate when the game responds to failure by automatically lowering the difficulty, but getting stuck in one place throwing myself at the same challenge over and over again has always been a feature of certain games that I skipped or tolerated, not one I sought or enjoyed, so I'm happy.
  • The...harem dynamic with Cloud seems way more pronounced than I remember it being in the original, especially now that Aerith and Tifa have met. I'm not sure if the writing is that different or if it's just the more realistic models and voice acting painting a more vivid picture than Duplo people and text boxes did. I'm always trying to be in a headspace while playing a game that I am e.g. Cloud, not "Emie controlling Cloud in a game." The way almost every woman and half the men we meet throw themselves at Cloud on sight is so excessive that it unfortunately takes me out of that headspace more often than I'd like, because it just feels so fake/forced... Which is why it surprised me to realize that, as Cloud, I really like Aerith! I never really shipped him with any of the girls when I played the original because again, with 1997 graphics I never really got past thinking of them as Duplo people (who are, of course, sexless). But man, I really like her for him in this game. (Maybe because she's one of the few who didn't fawn over him?)
  • I really like the new weapon upgrade system. I especially like that every time a character earns SP, that many points can be spent on each/all of their weapons, so you don't feel discouraged from investing in early-game weapons to save the points for end-game weapons. And that when you get new weapons, they start off with the same total SP as the weapons you've had all game, so your starter weapon doesn't outclass everything in the game just because you leveled up with it more times than any other. You can also learn unique abilities from weapons, like in several other FF games... though I can't remember if the original FF7 had that mechanic. Overall, actually feel inclined to choose different weapons in different battles, instead of the more classic RPG situation where you're just always going to use the newest/strongest weapon. A+
  • The new combat system is interesting. There's an option to bind frequently used commands to shortcut buttons instead of going into the command menu in battle, and I was using them a lot in the first chapter or two, but since you can only bind up to 4 shortcuts, once my characters had learned more than 4 abilities and collected a lot of materia that I was frequently swapping out from one fight to the next, it started to become more of a pain to choose which 4 commands were worth binding to shortcut and to have to keep redoing them every time I changed materia. Currently I have a 2-3 of each character's permanently-learned melee weapon skills bound to shortcuts, so I can mix them more fluidly with basic melee attacks, but I pretty much always use the menu for spells and non-combat abilities (Assess, Steal, Prayer) at this point. I like that you can use basic attacks without consuming ATB charge - so many formerly turn-based combat games that moved to ATB made the transition too 1:1 and just have the party members standing around doing literally nothing "between turns," so I'm really happy to see it done differently here.
  • Deadly Dodge materia is low-key the ultimate weapon.

When im in a cringe dialog, anti-fun gameplay and completely futile self-efficacy competition but my component is FF7 Remake

Nichts hieran macht Spaß:

  1. langsam balancieren oder durch Gänge quetschen;
  2. Bosse besiegen, damit sie in der Cutscene danach trotzdem gewinnen;
  3. ein ganzes Level spielen müssen, weil die Heroes nicht 1m Gleisbett durchqueren können;
  4. absolut unklare Buffs und Debuffs;
  5. ausschließlich leichte Kämpfe auf dem höchsten Verfügbaren Schwierigkeitsgrad;
  6. bescheuerte sexistische Figuren und Figurendesign;
  7. cringe fucking dialog non stop
  8. fetch quests
  9. trailing missions

Fun things:

  1. Protagonist:innen sind Ökoterrorist:innen
  2. big sword

Currently at chapter 13 and It feels like this game is messing with me.

Finally there's some great story progression, cutscenes, fights and dialog. I'm getting into the characters and their motivation, the story.

Then I get hit with another installment of "reset" - let's do some backtracking, walk around, crawl here, wiggle through this wall there, kill some random mobs, so we can have a few more dull conversations and move the plot forward at a snails pace.

Maybe I should stop rushing this game.

Sharing more thoughts the more I think about this game. Note that I'm only just past Chapter 12 so I know there is a lot more game to go.

The first half of this game is great. I really love the en media res beginning of the game, smack dab in the middle of an eco-terrorist mission to destroy a Shinra mako reactor. And then going to the slums, chumming around with Tifa and the Avalanche gang, Jessie who has stolen my heart, and so on. Then meeting Aerith, making your way down the labyrinthian favela from the church all the way to the dirty charm of Sector 6, and of course, the dazzling spectacle of boisterous clutter that is Wall Market. I couldn't get enough of the game in this part.

Everything changed with the sewers and the Train Graveyard, as I've mentioned before. It throws into sharp relief that which holds this game back, for me at least. Now, I've only played Final Fantasy XIII way back when I was in high school, and a handful of other JRPGs, but there is this trope, I feel, where you just have random monsters to fight and they're always chilling …

Everything changed with the sewers and the Train Graveyard, as I've mentioned before. It throws into sharp relief that which holds this game back, for me at least. Now, I've only played Final Fantasy XIII way back when I was in high school, and a handful of other JRPGs, but there is this trope, I feel, where you just have random monsters to fight and they're always chilling in an arena made just for them. Maybe that's just a thing! Like, you enter this really round spacious sewer arena, and there are three monsters positioned perfectly in the middle, like they're just waiting for you to do battle. I think I'm spoiled by From Software here, because the worlds feel 'correct' and the monster placement feels like it's part of the world, rather than an obstacle placed in the game by developers for you to fight. I just don't really like that. And granted, FFVII remake is not guilty of this all the time. It just becomes really evident in the sewers and train graveyard. It gets a lot better with the pillar defense, where it feels like enemies are trickling in because of the action going on there and whatnot.

The music for this game is... man. I don't even have the right words for it. I tend to get overly excited about things I like to the point of overstating them, but in this case, I don't think I'm doing that: the score for FFVII remake is probably some of the best produced, composed, arranged, and mixed music I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing in a game. I will take notice of good music in a game but I very rarely go out of my way to listen to it on my own but that's what I've been doing with FFVII remake.

If I had to point to a particular highlight for my time thus far, then I'll list a few that will stick with me:

  1. going to Jessie's parents' house in the laborer housing district
  2. meandering through the vertical labyrinth of the slums from the church to Sector 6 with Aerith
  3. exploring Wall Market

FFVII remake, so far, has been strongest when it's taking its time to be in the world it has so deftly created. I think it's at its worst when it's trying to be a video game.

And after a lot of typing and thinking, I think that's the best way I can articulate what I'm feeling about this game, this... almost masterpiece (so far?).

I don't have an eloquent way to articulate my thoughts so I'll just share them stream of consciousness:

  • combat is boring, clunky, don't like how boxed in it feels
  • exploration could not be more lackluster
  • I can't stand having control of the character taken away every 45 seconds for 3 minutes of cutscenes, I don't really get the point or appeal of games made in this fashion and maybe that's a sign that JRPGs just are not for me. The game feels like it's more movie than game
  • half the environments/areas in this game are impeccably designed and absolute sights to behold. The other half feel like generic layouts copy and pasted
  • the midgame in the sewers and the train graveyard were an absolute fucking slog
  • just reached the point where Jessie dies and I WANT MY MONEY BACK

Finally took the plunge proper into Final Fantasy VII Remake. I tried it in I think 2020 or 2021, but I was really only playing for the trophies and was following along with a video guide, so there was very little joy to be had. I also didn't play FFVII as a kid and meandered my way through the port of the original game, which was really cool, but I ultimately left with little knowledge of the story itself.

Now I'm playing on PC, so it comes with the bells and whistles: 60+ FPS, ultrawide, QoL mods, and this is also the first game I'm playing on my newly purchased Alienware AW3423DWF QD-OLED monitor so it's a total delight.

I really can't handle less than 60 FPS. For the life of me, I just cannot bear it. Call me a snob but it's no fluke. There are many games that I bounced off of hard back when they were locked at 30 FPS, and when I had the chance to play them at a higher framerate, it clicked.

This is no exception. There was no real reason I got onto the FF7 remake. I just felt like trying it …

This is no exception. There was no real reason I got onto the FF7 remake. I just felt like trying it out now that there was a PS5 enhancement and I'm somewhat in between games. I'm nearly at the end of Baldur's Gate 3 but I don't feel like continuing, so I'll return to that when I'm ready; and I started playing Alone in the Dark but it's not the kind of game that holds my interest for more than 45 minutes at a time.

So I sifted through my list of previously 'attempted' games and took a plunge on this one. I bought the Remake for PC knowing I would be able to return it if I didn't like it, thanks to Steam's awesome refund policy - no sarcasm there, I wish the PlayStation store let you do that - and what can I say, it clicked. Buttery smooth performance and framerate just did the trick for me.

The combat is fine. I don't look forward to it but I don't avoid it. What I really like is the aesthetic and the sheer detail throughout the world. It's a serious achievement, what they did with this game. The character models are attractive, sure, but the lived in feeling of Midgar and how every square foot of the world feels fully realized and developed, it's impressive.

I'll probably play Rebirth after I finish this one, which comes out in 2-ish weeks, so I'll take my time with this one, but not too much - I'm not going for completion, just fun. Playing it close to the story missions and forgoing and side quests that strike me as even remotely chore-like.

I've played this game on PS4, base PS5, PC, and now PS5 Pro. Yesterday, I played for an hour or two, starting at the end of Chapter 4. It’s performing great on PS5 Pro, and I’m trying to view it as connected to the 90s original, which explains the odd cutscenes. That perspective helps. Since I never played the original, I find the pacing and English VA a bit disappointing—might switch to Japanese. Still, I’m motivated to continue and explore Rebirth.

Replaing FFVII Remake before I dive into rebirth, and I just wanted to stop in and remind everyone that Tifa's Pro Pullup minigame made me struggle more than any one thing in all of Elden Ring. Whoever decided to make the mini game to beat growth-curve be 12 > 20 > 50 needs to spend 2 hours with a screaming infant at 3 am as punishment.

I really like the FF7 world a lot. The characters and themes are so strong. I love how fleshed out the characters are in this game specifically, particularly AVALANCHE. The combat is another strong point. The partner AI is very passive, but at least they aren't getting themselves in danger like the partners in FF15.
The things I didn't like: the pacing. I don't mind that a small portion of the original game was expanded on, but a lot of this game feels sluggish. There's a lot of watching or walking/talking/waiting instead of actually playing. Another thing I didn't like were the whispers. They represent fate in tangible form and I'm honestly not a big fan of fate being so literal like that.
For the Intermission specifically, the story is almost a waste of time. The gameplay is great though, I was surprised to find that Yuffie was my favorite character to control in the entire game.
Really excited for Rebirth to come to PC. I'm really interested to see where the story is going because it seems to deviate from the original timeline quite a bit.
